Airbag Unit With Igniter, Removing And Installing, Vehicles Through 07/2017: Removing
Risk of injury due to involuntary deployment.
- Pay attention to the safety precautions when working with pyrotechnic components. Refer to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING WITH PYROTECHNIC COMPONENTS .
- Observe the disposal regulations for pyrotechnic components. Refer to AIRBAG, BELT TENSIONER AND BATTERY CUT-OUT UNITS, STORING, TRANSPORTING AND DISPOSING (PYROTECHNIC COMPONENTS) .
-- Move the steering wheel as far to the rear and down as possible. Use the full steering column adjustment range for this.
-- Disconnect the battery ground cable when the ignition is turned on. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .
TIP:
The airbag unit is engaged into the steering wheel at three points -arrows-.
- The airbag unit retainers -B- hold the locking bracket -1- in the steering wheel.
- The airbag unit retainer -A- holds the locking bracket -2- in the steering wheel.
-- Move the steering wheel -1- out of the straight-ahead position by turning it counter-clockwise 130° -arrow A-, so that the opening -arrow B- on the rear side of the steering wheel faces directly upward (approximately 12 o'clock position).
There is a risk of damaging the wires.
- Do not use a flat-head screwdriver.
-- Guide a Phillips head screwdriver -2- or a T25 Torx screwdriver (approximately 100 mm long) all the way into the opening -arrow-. A thin foam wall in the inside of the steering wheel -1- must be punctured to do this.
Risk of damaging the airbag unit.
- Do not remove the airbag unit by pulling on it forcefully. If the airbag unit cannot be detached, push it back into the steering wheel and repeat the procedure.
-- Pull the screwdriver -1- forcefully upward -arrow A- ; this will press down on the locking bracket -2- and the airbag retainers will be released from the steering wheel -B arrows-.
TIP:
Also check if both airbag retainers -B arrows- are released from the steering wheel.
-- Turn the steering wheel back and make sure that the airbag does not re-engage on the side it was released.
-- Move the steering wheel -1- out of the straight-ahead position by turning it clockwise 130° -arrow A-, so that the opening -arrow B- on the rear side of the steering wheel faces directly upward (approximately 12 o'clock position).

-- Bring the steering wheel back to the center position (wheels straight ahead) and make sure that the airbag does not re-engage.
Risk of injury due to involuntary deployment.
- Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". For example, this can be done by briefly touching the door striker.
-- Remove the airbag -3- from the steering wheel slightly.
-- Pull out the connector lock -2- -arrow- and press it down, disconnect the connector -1-.
-- Equipped on some models: disconnect the connector for the buttons in the steering wheel.
Risk of injury due to involuntary deployment.
- Lay the airbag so that the collision cushion faces upward.
