Lower Timing Chain Cover, Replacing: Installing

NOTE:

Replace the bolts that were tightened with an additional turn after removing them.

Replace the lower timing chain cover and seal after removal.

CAUTION:

Risk of contaminating the lubricating system.

  • Cover open engine components.

-- Remove any sealant residue on the cylinder block using a flat blade scraper.

-- Clean any oil or grease off the sealing surfaces.

-- Check that both alignment pins -arrows- for centering the cover are present.

NOTE:

Be sure to check the expiration date of the sealant.

-- Cut the tube nozzle at the front marking (nozzle diameter: about 3 mm).

CAUTION:

There is a risk that the lubrication system could be blocked by excess sealant.

  • Do not apply sealant bead thicker than indicated.

-- Apply the sealant on the clean sealing surface -arrow 1- and on the edges -arrows 2- of the new cover.

NOTE:

The cover must be installed within five minutes after the sealant has been applied.

-- Immediately attach the cover and tighten the bolts.

NOTE:

After installing the cover, allow the sealant to harden for approximately 30 minutes. Only afterward may the engine oil be replenished.

-- Install the vibration damper. Refer to VIBRATION DAMPER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the ribbed belt tensioner. Refer to RIBBED BELT TENSIONER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Fill with engine oil and check the oil level. Refer to ENGINE OIL

-- Install the engine cover. Refer to ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
