Brake Pads, Removing And Installing, Steel Brakes 1LA/1LB: Installing

Install in reverse order of removal and Note The Following: 

• Always replace brake pads on the same axle at the same time.
• Use the complete repair kit when installing new brake pads.
• Clean the bolts and nuts before reusing.
• Replace damaged bolts and nuts.
• Replace the self-locking bolts and nuts after removal.

-- If the brake pads are being replaced, check the brake rotors for wear and damage.

• Brake rotor wear limit. Refer to TECHNICAL DATA, BRAKES .

• Use only mineral spirits to clean the brake caliper housing.
• Check the protective caps of the brake caliper pistons for damage and install the complete repair kit, if necessary. Refer to BRAKE CALIPER PISTON, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, SINGLE-PISTON BRAKE .

-- Check the bearing bushings of the guide pins for damage and check that the guide pins move easily. Install the complete repair kit, if necessary. Refer to BEARING BUSHING AND GUIDE PIN, REPLACING .

-- If the brake fluid is up to the "MAX" marking on used brake pads, it must be extracted.

• Use the Brake Charger/Bleeder Unit:VAS5234  to extract brake fluid from the brake fluid reservoir.

-- Use the Piston Resetting Tool:T10145  to press the brake caliper piston all the way back into the brake caliper housing.

-- Clean the brake carrier -1- at the contact surfaces -arrows- for the brake pads.

-- If equipped, remove the protective film from the backing plate of the brake pad.

-- If re-using, install the marked brake pads in the same location.

-- Bring the brake pads into their installation position. Refer to Figure.

-- Bring the brake caliper housing -1- into its installation position and tighten the guide pins -arrow-.

-- Insert the caps -2 and 3-.

• Make sure the brake hose is routed correctly.
• Make sure the brake hose is not blocked, bent, twisted or rubbing against the vehicle.

-- Bring the brake pad wear sensor into its installation position on the bracket and turn it in the direction of the -arrow- until the tab -2- engages in the hole -3- on the bracket.

-- Connect the connector -1-.

-- Insert the spring -1- into both holes -2- in the brake caliper housing.

• The spring must be pressed under the brake carrier -arrows- after it is inserted in both holes.

TIP:

If improperly installed, the wear of the outer brake pad cannot be adjusted, thereby increasing brake pedal travel.

-- Check brake fluid level, and fill if necessary.

-- With the vehicle stationary, firmly press the brake pedal several times so that the brake pads in the operating condition properly sit in their respective position.
