Transmission Fluid Level, Checking: Procedure

NOTE:

Follow the rules for clean working conditions. Refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .

Follow all disposal regulations for transmission fluids. Refer to GENERAL REPAIR INFORMATION .

WARNING:

Danger of personal injury.

The coolant fan can come on by itself, even when the ignition is turned off, for example, caused by heat build-up inside the engine compartment.
Wear protective eyewear.
Wear acid-resistant safety gloves.

CAUTION:

Danger of causing damage to the transmission.

Do not start the engine if there is little or no oil in the transmission due to repair work or severe loss of transmission fluid.
In this case, fill first with S tronic transmission fluid.

Test Conditions

Transmission not in emergency operation mode.
Move the vehicle onto a 4-column shop hoist or over a work pit so it is completely level.
The selector level is in "P".
The parking brake button should be activated to close the electro-mechanical parking brake.
Remove the noise insulation -1-. Refer to NOISE INSULATION .

Exhaust hose/hoses of an exhaust extraction system connected.
Engine running at idle.
The Air Conditioning (A/C) and the heater are off.
Vehicle Diagnostic Tester is connected. Refer to Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
Transmission fluid temperature 35 to 45° C (95 to 113° F).

Read the Transmission Oil Temperature:

NOTE:

The gear oil level changes with the gear oil temperature. Gear oil temperature that is too low leads to overfilling, too high a temperature leads to underfilling.

Overfilling or underfilling will influence the function of the transmission.
