Brake Pads, Removing And Installing, Rear Brakes: Removing

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

NOTE:

Label the brake pads that will be used again when removing. Install in the same position, otherwise the braking effect will be uneven.

Do not disconnect the connectors from the parking brake motors.

-- Loosen the parking brake.

-- Switch off the ignition.

-- Remove the affected rear wheel. Refer to Wheels and Tires .

NOTE:

If the brake pads are replaced, use the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester to press back the parking brake pistons.

-- Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester to the data link connector on the vehicle with the ignition switched off.

-- Switch the ignition on.

-- After entering the VIN, select Guided Functions .

-- Drive back the parking brake motor:

Suspension/brake system
	01 OBD-capable systems
		03 ABS Control Module J104 integrated parking brake
			03 Electric parking brake functions
				03 46 Remove brake pads

-- Continue to follow the instructions in the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester display.

-- Disconnect the connector -2- from the Right Rear ABS Wheel Speed Sensor -G44- / Left Rear ABS Wheel Speed Sensor -G46- and free up the wire.

-- Disconnect and free up the connector -2- for the brake pad wear sensor by opening the dust cap -1-.

WARNING:

Risk of injury!

The spring -1- is tensioned. Hold the spring firmly by hand to remove. While doing so, do not damage the paint on the brake caliper.

-- Pry out the spring -1- for the brake pads from the brake caliper in direction of -arrows- using for example a screwdriver, while doing so hold the spring with a hand.

-- Remove the caps -2 and 3-.

-- Remove both guide pins -1- with the :T10503 from the brake caliper.

CAUTION:

Danger of damaging the brake hose.

Do not let the brake caliper hang on the brake hose. Do not support the weight with the brake hose.
Replace the brake hose if damaged.

Risk of damaging the brake caliper piston.

Do not operate the brakes or the electromechanical parking brake when the brake caliper is removed.

WARNING:

Do not damage the brake hose and brake line.
Do not bend the brake line past the specified form.
A damaged brake hose or a damaged or bent brake line must be replaced.

-- Hang the brake caliper on the body using a suitable wire.

-- Remove the brake pads.
