Camshaft, Measuring Radial Clearance

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Plastigauge^®

NOTE:

Use old bolts to measure radial play.

-- Remove the camshafts. Refer to CAMSHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Mark the assignment of the roller rocker lever for installation later.

-- Remove the roller rocker lever and place it on a clean surface.

-- Clean the bearing and the bearing journals.

-- Place Plastigauge^® over entire width of bearing journal or into bearing.

The Plastigauge^® must rest in center of bearing.

-- Re-install the camshafts, mount the camshaft housing and tighten with an additional turn. Refer to Tightening Specifications , do not turn the camshafts while doing this.

-- Remove the camshaft housing and the camshafts again.

-- Compare the width of Plastigauge^® with the measuring scale.

Radial clearance:

For 24 mm diameter bearings: 0.024 to 0.066 mm.
For 36 mm diameter bearings: 0.032 to 0.078 mm.

-- Replace bolts for the final assembly.
