Fuel Tank, Removing And Installing: Removing

-- Follow all safety precautions, refer to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .

-- Follow the guidelines for clean working conditions, refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .

WARNING:

Risk of accident due to the weight of the fuel tank.

  • The fuel tank must be empty when removing it.

-- Drain the fuel tank, refer to FUEL TANK, DRAINING .

-- Remove the rear bench seat, refer to SEAT BENCH/SINGLE SEAT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Fold the insulation mat near the locking flange cover to the side.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and the locking flange cover.

-- Disconnect the connectors -1 and 2- on the locking flange.

-- Open the fuel filler door.

-- Clean the area around the fuel filler tube.

-- Remove the fuel filler cap -arrow-.

NOTE:

Seal the fuel filler tube opening with a clean plug to prevent dirt from getting into the tube.

-- Remove the right rear wheel housing liner, refer to REAR WHEEL HOUSING LINER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Vehicles without an Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) System

-- Remove fuel filler tube bolts -1 and 2-.

Vehicles with an SCR system

-- Depending on the vehicle equipment, remove the bolts -2- for the reducing agent tank filler neck.

-- Remove the bolts -1 and 3- for the fuel filler tube.

Continuation for All Vehicles 

-- Remove the rear section from the exhaust system, refer to EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS, SEPARATINGExhaust System, Emission Controls .

WARNING:

Risk of vehicle tipping on hoist with rear axle removed.

  • Secure the vehicle on the hoist before loosening the subframe bolts, refer to SUBFRAME, SECURING .

-- Remove the subframe with attachments, refer to SUBFRAME, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the exhaust system heat shield, refer to FLOOR HEAT SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

WARNING:

There is a risk of burns due to hot fuel.

  • The temperature of the fuel lines or fuel may reach 100 °C (212 °F) after stopping the engine. Let the fuel cool down before opening any line connections otherwise there is a danger of scalding.
  • Wear safety gloves
  • Wear protective eyewear.

There is a risk of injury because the fuel is under pressure.

  • Place rags around the connection before opening the system. Then release pressure by carefully loosening the connection.

-- Vehicles with parking heater: Disconnect the fuel line -3- to the metering pump.

-- Disconnect fuel lines -1 and 2-. Disconnect the connector couplings, refer to CONNECTOR COUPLINGS, SEPARATING .

-- Vehicles with parking heater: Disconnect the connector -1- at the metering pump.

-- Place the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS 6931 underneath to support as shown and support the fuel tank.

-- A second technician is needed to hold the rear edge of the fuel tank.

WARNING:

Risk of accident due to the weight of the fuel tank.

  • The fuel tank must be empty when removing it.

-- Remove the bolts -1 through 6-.

-- Lower the fuel tank using the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS 6931 while guiding the fuel tank with one hand.

NOTE:

To improve clarity, the fuel tank is shown without the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS 6931.
