Camshaft Timing Chain, Removing From Camshafts: Removing
The camshaft timing chains stay on the engine in the following description.
-- Remove the timing chain guard. Refer to TIMING CHAIN COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Cylinder Bank 1 (Right):
-- Remove the right drive axle from the transmission flange shaft. Refer to DRIVE AXLE .
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and the right heat shield -1-.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the right drive axle heat shield.
-- Remove the air filter.
-- Loosen the hose clamps to disconnect the hose for the EVAP canister system -1-.
-- Free up the hose.
The illustration shows the Installed position on an Audi S6/S7.
Ignore item -2-.
-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the EVAP Canister Purge Regulator Valve 1 -N80-.
-- Remove the bolt -arrow-.
-- Remove the nuts -1 and 2- and the bolt -3-, free up the guide wire and move them to the side.
-- Remove the double bolt -arrow- and then remove the shield -1-.
Do not remove ball head item -2-.
The illustration shows the Installed position on an Audi S6/S7.
Ignore items -3 and 4-.
-- Free up the turbocharger vacuum actuator hoses.
-- Disconnect the vacuum hose -1-.
-- Disconnect the connectors -1 and 2- and push the wiring harness aside.
-- Remove the high pressure pipe. Refer to CYLINDER BANK 1 (RIGHT) HIGH PRESSURE PIPE, REMOVING .
-- Release and remove the sealing plug from the right camshaft housing -arrows- by turning it to the left.
Cylinder Bank 2 (Left):
-- Remove the ignition coil for cylinder "7". Refer to IGNITION COILS WITH POWER OUTPUT STAGES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Release and remove the sealing plug from the left camshaft housing -arrows- by turning it to the left.
Continuation for Both Cylinder Banks:
Audi S6/RS6/RS7:
-- Remove the radiator, with the fan shroud. Refer to RADIATOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Audi S7:
-- Remove the fan shroud. Refer to FAN SHROUD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Position the :T40272 onto the :T40263 .
-- Attach the adapter to the bolts on the vibration damper.
- The semi-round countersink -arrow A- on the :T40272 must face the semi-round countersink -arrow B- on the vibration damper.
Ignore the notch on the :T40272 .
-- Turn the crankshaft to "TDC" in direction of engine rotation in direction of -arrow-.
- The threaded holes -arrows- in the camshaft must be visible through the openings in the camshaft housing that were previously sealed with the sealing plug.
The right camshaft housing is shown in the illustration.
If the threaded hole is not visible, turn the crankshaft one more turn.
Cylinder Bank 1 (Right):
-- If necessary, turn the crankshaft slightly back and forth to insert the :T40264/1 into the right cylinder head and tighten -arrows-.
- Tightening specification 12 Nm.
Cylinder Bank 2 (Left):
-- If necessary, turn the crankshaft slightly back and forth to insert the :T40264/2 into the left cylinder head and tighten -arrows-.
- Tightening specification 12 Nm.
TIP:
- If the camshafts threads do not point exactly upward, the bolts from the Camshaft Lock : T40264/2 cannot be installed.
- In this case place the Wrench - Camshaft:T40269 on the camshaft adjuster and turn the camshaft slightly back and forth.
Continuation for Both Cylinder Banks:
-- If necessary, turn the crankshaft slightly back and forth to insert the :T40264/3 by hand into the vibration damper opening and all the way into the cylinder block.
Cylinder Bank 1 (Right):
-- Press the right camshaft timing chain tensioner guide rails in as far as the stop using a screwdriver -1- and secure the chain tensioner with a :T40071 .
The toothed belt tensioner is lubricated with oil and should only be compressed slowly by applying constant pressure.
Cylinder Bank 2 (Left):
-- Press the left camshaft timing chain tensioner guide rails in as far as the stop using a screwdriver -1- and secure the chain tensioner with a :T40071 .
The toothed belt tensioner is lubricated with oil and should only be compressed slowly by applying constant pressure.
Continuation for Both Cylinder Banks:
The camshafts can get damaged.
- The :T40264/1 and :T40264/2 must never be used as a counterholder to loosen the camshaft adjuster bolt or camshaft chain sprocket.
-- To counterhold, attach the :T40269 to the relevant camshaft adjuster and loosen the bolt -1-.
-- Mark the installation position of the camshaft adjuster with paint for installation later.
Danger of causing damage to the engine.
- To prevent small parts from accidentally entering the engine through the opening in the timing chain compartment, cover the opening with a clean cloth.
Cylinder Bank 1 (Right):
-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2- and remove both of the camshaft adjusters.
-- Remove the camshaft timing chain from the gliding piece.
Cylinder Bank 2 (Left):
-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2- and remove both of the camshaft adjusters.
-- Remove the camshaft timing chain from the gliding piece.
