Brake Pads, Removing And Installing: Removing

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE:

Label the brake pads when removing if they are going to be used again. Install in the same position, otherwise the braking effect will be uneven.

Do not disconnect the connectors from the parking brake motors.

-- Loosen the parking brake.

-- Switch off the ignition.

-- Remove the affected rear wheel. Refer to STEERING WHEEL .

NOTE:

If the brake pads are being replaced, use the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester to press back the parking brake pistons.

-- Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester to the vehicle diagnostic connection when the ignition is switched off.

-- Switch the ignition on.

-- After entering the VIN, select Guided Functions  .

-- Drive back the parking brake motors:

Suspension/brake system
  01 OBD-capable systems
    03 ABS Control Module J104 integrated parking brake
      03 Electric parking brake functions
        03 46 Remove brake pads

-- Continue to follow the instructions in the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester display.

-- Disconnect the connector -2- from the Right Rear ABS Wheel Speed Sensor -G44- / Left Rear ABS Wheel Speed Sensor -G46- and free up the wire.

NOTE:

The illustration shows the installation position on a vehicle with a multi-link suspension.

Ignore -item 1-.

Vehicles with 2.5L TFSI Engine

-- Disconnect and free up the connector -2- for the brake pad wear sensor by opening the dust cap -1-.

WARNING:

Risk of injury!

  • The spring -1- is tensioned. Hold the spring with the other hand -B- to remove.

-- Pry the spring -1- for the brake pads with a screwdriver -A- out of the brake caliper -arrow- while doing so do not damage the painting on the brake caliper.

-- Remove the caps -arrows- from the guide pins.

-- Remove both guide pins from the brake caliper using the :T10503  and :VAS6784  .

CAUTION:

There is a risk of damaging the brake hose.

  • Do not let the brake caliper hang on the brake hose. Do not support the weight with the brake hose.
  • Replace the brake hose if damaged.

There is a risk of damaging the brake caliper piston.

  • Do not operate the brakes or the electro-mechanical parking brake when the brake caliper is removed.

-- Hang the brake caliper -1- on the body using suitable wire -A-.
