Timing Chain, Checking: Procedure

Preliminary work may be required depending on the model. Refer to TIMING CHAIN, CHECKING [CNSB, CNTC, CYFB] (DI - 1.8L/2.0L) / CHAIN DRIVE .

-- Remove the plug -arrow-. The plugs must be replaced.

CAUTION:

- Only let the engine turn in the direction of engine rotation.

-- Turn the crankshaft with :T40263 , :T40314 and a 24 mm socket only in the direction of engine rotation -arrow-.

-- Turn the crankshaft in direction of engine rotation until the chain tensioner piston is extended the maximum distance in direction of -arrow-.

-- Count the visible piston teeth.

TIP:

The visible teeth are all of the teeth that are located to the right of the chain tensioner housing -arrow-.

If six or fewer teeth are visible, the timing chain must not be replaced.
If six or fewer teeth are visible and there is an entry in the DTC memory: adjust the chain length using the :VAS5570 , 01 - Chain Length Adaptation Diagnosis and delete the DTC memory.
If seven or more teeth are visible: replace the camshaft timing chain. Refer to CAMSHAFT TIMING CHAIN, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
