Gear Oil Level, Checking, Transfer Case, Transmission With Separated Oil System: Notes
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler Kit :VAS6617
- :VAS6617/2
- :VAS6617/6
- Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit :SMN372500
- Protective eyewear
This procedure contains mandatory replaceable parts. Refer to component overview and parts information prior to starting procedure.
Mandatory Replacement Parts
- Plug - for checking and filling
- Risk of damaging transfer case and the front axle differential through incorrect oil level.
- Depending on the version there are transmissions with separate or combined oil systems.
- For vehicles with combined oil systems the steps for it must be followed, because the oil level from the transfer case and the front axle differential are dependent on one another.
- They are differentiated only by the transmission code. Refer to TRANSMISSION/ENGINE ALLOCATION .
- Gear oil temperature: approximately 20 °C (68 °F) (room temperature).
- The engine must be switched off when working.
- Move the vehicle onto a four-column shop hoist or over a work pit so it is completely level.
- The transmission must be still for at least 15 minutes to make sure the oil settles internally.
- Transmission in "P".
- The parking brake button should be activated to close the electro-mechanical parking brake.
General repair instructions. Refer to GENERAL REPAIR INFORMATION .
Pay attention to clean working conditions for the transmission. Refer to GUIDELINES FOR CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
Follow the disposal requirements.
Replace the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) drain plug and seal.
Replace the plug for the ATF check and fill hole.
-- Place the :SMN372500 under the transmission.
Danger of eye injury.
- Wear protective eyewear.
Place a cloth over the tunnel crossmember to prevent axle oil from getting into the cast pockets on the top.
-- Remove the drain plug -arrow A- from the center differential housing.
- Specified value: The level is correct when the transmission fluid comes up to the bottom edge of oil filler hole.
If the level does not reach the bottom of the oil fill hole:
-- Install the :VAS6617/6 with the :VAS6617/2 in the check and fill hole in the transfer case and tighten by hand.
After repair or oil change, fill the transfer case with approximately 0.8 liters of gear oil and wait at least five minutes, so that the internal oil level between the center differential and oil fill space can equalize. After check the fluid level.
-- Connect the :VAS6617 and fill the transfer case with necessary gear oil level. Transmission fluid. Refer to the parts information.
-- Wait five minutes.
-- Remove the :VAS6617/6 from the transmission and let any extra oil drain out.
- Specified value: The level is correct when the transmission fluid comes up to the bottom edge of oil filler hole. Fill the gear oil once more if necessary.
