Removal And Installation

Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
- 1.NOTE: Use a steering wheel holding device (such as Hunter ® 28-75-1 or equivalent).
Using a suitable holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
- 2.WARNING: Do not reuse steering column shaft bolts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column shaft detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).NOTE: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the upper shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring may result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be recentered. For additional information, refer to Supplemental Restraint System .
Remove the bolt and disconnect the upper steering column shaft from the lower steering column shaft.
- To install, tighten the new bolt to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- 4.WARNING: Do not reuse steering column shaft bolts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column shaft detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).
Remove the bolt and the upper steering column shaft.
- To install, tighten the new bolt to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft).
- 5.WARNING: Do not reuse steering column shaft bolts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column shaft detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).
Remove the bolt and disconnect the lower steering column shaft from the steering gear and remove.
- To install, tighten the new bolt to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
