Pinpoint Test G : The Power Liftgate Does Not Power Close (Power Open OK)

NOTE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) from the Flex Probe Kit when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

  1. G1 INITIALIZE THE LTM AND RECHECK THE POWER LIFTGATE OPERATION

    • Ignition ON.
    • TURN the power liftgate feature on (enable) from the message center.
    • Check the power liftgate operation.

    Does the power liftgate operate correctly? 

    Yes  The system is operating correctly. The concern may have been caused by the liftgate end points not stored in the LTM memory.
    No  GO to  G2.
  2. G2 CHECK THE MANUAL OPERATION OF THE LIFTGATE

    • Turn the power liftgate feature OFF (disable) from the message center.
    • While manually opening and closing the liftgate, check the liftgate for:
      • liftgate/wedge alignment.
      • strut operation (struts should push open liftgate when beyond half open).
      • power liftgate rod operation (should move freely while manually opening and closing liftgate and should be securely mounted to the liftgate and bracket).
      • power liftgate latch (should latch completely).

    Does the liftgate open and close correctly? 

    Yes  GO to  G3.
    No  REPAIR as necessary.
  3. G3 CHECK FOR LTM DTC B2699, B2700, B2701 AND B2702

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the LTM self-test.

    Is DTC B2699, B2700, B2701 or B2702 present? 

    Yes  GO to  G4.
    No  GO to  G11.
  4. G4 CHECK THE LIFTGATE PINCH STRIPS USING THE PINCH STRIPS PIDs

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, view the LTM PIDs
    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, monitor the following LTM PIDs while activating the left and right pinch strips:
      • Liftgate left pinch strip status (LFT_PINCH)
      • Liftgate right pinch strip status (RT_PINCH)

    Does the PID state change/agree with the pinch strip status? 

    Yes  GO to  G17.
    No  GO to  G5.
  5. G5 CHECK THE PINCH STRIP SIGNAL CIRCUIT

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Suspect pinch strip.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:

      Left Pinch Strip 

      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the voltage approximately 5 volts? 

    Yes  GO to  G9.
    No  GO to  G6.
  6. G6 CHECK THE PINCH STRIP SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:

      Left Pinch Strip 

      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit.
    No  GO to  G7.
  7. G7 CHECK THE PINCH STRIP SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Measure:

      Left Pinch Strip 

      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  G8.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  8. G8 CHECK THE PINCH STRIP SIGNAL CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure:

      Left Pinch Strip

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  G17.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  9. G9 CHECK THE PINCH STRIP RETURN CIRCUIT

    • Measure:

      Left Pinch Strip

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new pinch strip in question. REFER to Pinch Strip Switch .
    No  GO to  G10.
  10. G10 CHECK THE PINCH STRIP RETURN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure:

      Left Pinch Strip

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  G17.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  11. G11 CHECK THE LTM DETENT AND FORKBOLT SWITCH PIDs

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, view the LTM PIDs.
    • Operate the liftgate manually while monitoring the following LTM PIDs :
      • Detent switch status (DETENTSW)
      • Forkbolt switch status (FORKBLT_S)
      • Forkbolt secondary switch (FKSWSEC)
    • NOTE: The liftgate is in the primary position when the liftgate is in the full closed position. The liftgate is in the unlatched position when the liftgate is open and completely out of the striker. Make the the liftgate is fully latched (second click) when monitoring the PIDs. If necessary, manually latch the forkbolt to the primary position.

      Begin with the liftgate in the open position, then slowly close the liftgate into each of the latch positions specified by the table below.

      (1) If detent switch is active in the fully unlatched position, manually attempt to rotate the forkbolt toward the latched position.

    Do the switch states agree with the table? 

    Yes  GO to  G17.
    No  GO to  G12.
  12. G12 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE DETENT AND FORKBOLT SWITCHES IN THEIR CLOSED STATE

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Close the liftgate and make sure it is fully latched.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    • Open the liftgate and make sure the latch is completely out of the striker.
    • Measure:

    Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  G15.
    No  GO to  G13.
  13. G13 CHECK THE DETENT AND FORKBOLT SWITCH GROUND CIRCUIT

    • Disconnect: Power Liftgate Latch C4339 .
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  G14.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  14. G14 CHECK THE DETENT AND FORKBOLT SWITCH CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  CHECK the power liftgate latch connectors for bent or corroded connections on the component side and harness side and REPAIR as necessary. If no concern is found, INSTALL a new power liftgate latch. REFER to Handles, Locks, Latches and Entry Systems .
    No  REPAIR the circuit in question.
  15. G15 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE DETENT AND FORKBOLT SWITCHES IN THEIR OPEN STATE

    • Close the liftgate and make sure it is fully latched.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    • Open the liftgate and make sure the latch is completely out of the striker.
    • NOTE: If resistance measured is less than 3 ohms, manually rotate the forkbolt toward the latched position and retest.

      Measure:

    Are the resistances greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  G17.
    No  GO to  G16.
  16. G16 CHECK THE DETENT AND FORKBOLT SWITCH CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Disconnect: Power Liftgate Latch C4339 .
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Are the resistances greater than 10, 000? 

    Yes  CHECK the power liftgate latch connectors for bent or corroded connections on the component side and harness side and REPAIR as necessary. If no concern is found, INSTALL a new power liftgate latch. REFER to Handles, Locks, Latches and Entry Systems .
    No  REPAIR the circuit in question.
  17. G17 CHECK FOR CORRECT LTM OPERATION

    • Disconnect all the LTM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion (install new connectors or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    • Reconnect all the LTM connectors and make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new LTM. REFER to Liftgate/Trunk Module (LTM) .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
