Gear Oil Level, Checking, Front Final Drive, Transmission With Separated Oil System
- Risk of damaging transfer case and the front axle differential through incorrect oil level.
- Depending on the version there are transmissions with separate or combined oil systems.
- For vehicles with combined oil systems the steps for it must be followed, because the oil level from the transfer case and the front axle differential are dependent on one another.
- They are differentiated only by the transmission code, refer to TRANSMISSION/ENGINE ALLOCATION .
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler Kit VAS6617
- Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit VAS6622
- Protective eyewear
Procedure
- Gear oil temperature: approximately 20 °C (68 °F) (room temperature).
- The engine must be switched off when working.
- Move the vehicle onto a four-column shop hoist or over a work pit so it is completely level.
- Transmission in "P".
- The parking brake button should be activated to close the electro-mechanical parking brake.
- Tightening specification, refer to OVERVIEW - DRAIN AND INSPECTION PLUGS FOR GEAR OIL .
General repair instructions, refer to GENERAL REPAIR INFORMATION .
Pay attention to clean working conditions for the transmission, refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS, GUIDELINES .
Always maintain the specified transmission fluid level. The transmission is very sensitive to overfilling.
Replace the plug for the ATF check and fill hole.
Follow the disposal requirements.
-- Remove the rear noise insulation -2-, refer to REAR NOISE INSULATION .
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the right heat shield -1-.
-- Audi RS6: Remove the bolts -1 and 2- and then press the coolant pipe on the right to the side.
Danger of eye injury.
- Wear protective eyewear.
-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit VAS6617 under the transmission.
-- Remove the drain plug -arrow A- from the front final drive.
- Specified value: the oil level is correct when the front final drive is filled to the lower edge of the filler hole.
After repair or oil change, fill the transmission with approximately 0.9 liters of gear oil and wait at least five minutes, so that the internal oil level between the differential and oil fill space can equalize. Then check the fluid level.
If the level does not reach the bottom of the oil fill hole:
-- Install the Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler - Adapter 6 VAS6617/6 with Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler - Adapter 2 VAS6617/2 in the transmission hand tight.
-- Install the Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler Kit VAS6617 and fill the required gear oil. Allocate correct gear oil.
-- Remove the Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler - Adapter 6 VAS6617/6 from the transmission and let any extra oil drain out.
-- Tighten the new drain plug -arrow A- for the front final drive.
-- Install the subframe heat shield, refer to SUBFRAME HEAT SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Audi RS6: Install the coolant pipe on the right side of transmission.
