ATF Level, Checking, Transmission With Combined Oil System
- Risk of damaging transfer case and the front axle differential through incorrect oil level.
- Depending on the version there are transmissions with separate or combined oil systems.
- For vehicles with combined oil systems the steps for it must be followed, because the oil level from the transfer case and the front axle differential are dependent on one another.
- They are differentiated only by the transmission code, refer to TRANSMISSION/ENGINE ALLOCATION .
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler Kit VAS6617
- Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit VAS6622
- Protective eyewear
Procedure
- Gear oil temperature: approximately 20 °C (68 °F) (room temperature).
- The engine must be switched off when working.
- Move the vehicle onto a four-column shop hoist or over a work pit so it is completely level.
- The transmission must be still for at least 15 minutes to make sure the oil settles internally.
- Transmission in "P".
- The parking brake button should be activated to close the electro-mechanical parking brake.
- Tightening specification, refer to OVERVIEW - DRAIN AND INSPECTION PLUGS FOR GEAR OIL .
General repair instructions, refer to GENERAL REPAIR INFORMATION .
Pay attention to clean working conditions for the transmission, refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS, GUIDELINES .
Follow the disposal requirements.
Replace the ATF drain plug and seal.
Replace the plug for the ATF check and fill hole.
-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit VAS6617 under the transmission.
Danger of eye injury.
- Wear protective eyewear.
Place a cloth over the tunnel crossmember to prevent axle oil from getting into the cast pockets on the top.
-- Remove the drain plug -arrow A- from the front final drive.
-- Remove the drain plug -arrow A- from the center differential housing.
- Specified value: The fluid level is correct, when the front final drive and the rear transfer case if filled up to the lower edge of the filler hole.
If the level does not reach the bottom of the oil fill hole:
-- Screw in the Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler - Adapter 6 VAS6617/6 with Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler - Adapter 2 VAS6617/2 in the transfer case inspection hole -arrow A- by hand and fill until the lower edge of the filling opening with gear oil. Do not close the inspection hole yet! Allocate correct gear oil.
-- Install the Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler - Adapter 6 VAS6617/6 with Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler - Adapter 2 VAS6617/2 in the front final drive inspection hole hand tight and fill until the lower edge of the filling opening with gear oil.
-- Then fill the front with approximately 1 liter axle oil.
-- Wait the equivalent time, until axle oil flows out of the rear transfer case inspection hole.
-- Immediately after oil flows out, close the rear transfer case inspection hole.
Through overfilling the transmission fluid flows between the inner oil level from the front final drive to the rear transfer case.
-- Remove the Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler - Adapter 6 VAS6617/6 from the transmission and let any extra gear oil on the front final drive drain out.
-- Tighten both inspection plugs.
