Center Differential, Removing And Installing: Removing
- Transmission installed
Danger of causing damage to the transmission.
- Do not let the engine run or tow vehicle without gear oil.
General repair instructions, refer to GENERAL REPAIR INFORMATION .
Pay attention to clean working conditions for the transmission, refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS, GUIDELINES .
-- Remove the rear noise insulation -2-, refer to REAR NOISE INSULATION .
Check the vehicle data label or the designation on the rear final drive itself to determine which one is installed in the vehicle. Then select the correct rear final drive repair information.
-- Remove the driveshaft, refer to DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Danger of damaging the transmission fluid pan.
- Never use the transmission fluid pan as a support for the transmission.
-- Install the 2 flat mounts -1 and 2- in the Transmission Support3282.
-- Place the Transmission Support3282 on the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAG1383A.
-- Support the transmission at the bolting surfaces on the transmission fluid with a rubber pad -3- as illustrated.
-- Lift the transmission slightly with the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAG1383A.
There is the risk of an accident.
- The Engine/Gearbox Jack VAG1383A may only be used during assembly and must not sit unsupervised under the vehicle.
-- Remove the bolts from the tunnel crossmember -arrows-.
-- Remove the nuts -arrows- and the tunnel crossmember.
-- Drain the transmission fluid from the transfer case, by loosening the drain plug -arrow B-.
-- Tighten the new drain plug -arrow B-, refer to OVERVIEW - DRAIN AND INSPECTION PLUGS FOR GEAR OIL .
-- Lower the transmission with the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6131 just far enough until the transmission fluid pan is not touching the crossbrace -A-.
-- Remove the bolts from the center differential housing in the following sequence: -6 to 1-.
Transmission components could be damaged.
- Carefully remove the center differential housing from the transmission toward the rear. Otherwise the center differential could fall out of the transmission.
-- Secure the center differential -1- so it does not fall out or remove it toward the rear from the input shaft.
