Coolant Mixture Ratio
- Coolant (40%) and distilled water (60%) for freeze protection down to -25 °C (-13 °F)
- Coolant (50%) and distilled water (50%) for freeze protection down to -36 °C (-32.8 °F)
- Recommended Coolant, refer to Parts .
-- Install the coolant hose and clamp -2-.
-- Fill the VAS6096 with 10 liters of coolant in the correct mixture ratio, mixture ratio, refer to Coolant Mixture Ratio above.
-- Install the Cooling System Tester - Adapter VAG1274/8 on the coolant expansion tank.
-- Attach the Cooling System Charge Kit VAS6096 on the Cooling System Tester - Adapter VAG1274/8.
-- Place the air outlet hose -1- in a small container -2-.
A small amount of coolant which should be collected is drawn off with the discharged air.
-- Close valves -A and B- by turning lever at a right angle to direction of flow.
-- Connect the hose -3- to compressed air.
- Pressure: 6 to 10 bar (87 to 145 psi) positive pressure.
-- Open valve -B- by turning level in direction of flow.
- The suction jet pump generates pressure in the coolant system; indicator on display instrument must move into green area.
-- Briefly open valve -A- by turning lever in direction of flow so that hose on the Cooling System Charge Kit VAS6096 coolant reservoir fills with coolant.
-- Close valve -A- again.
-- Leave valve -B- open another two minutes.
- More pressure is generated in the coolant system by the suction jet pump; indicator on display instrument must stay in green area.
-- Close valve -B-.
- Needle in the display instrument must remain in the green region, then the sufficient vacuum in the cooling system is obtained for the upcoming filling.
If needle stands below the green area, repeat procedure.
If pressure falls, check coolant system for leaks.
-- Remove pressurized air hose.
-- Open valve -A-.
- Coolant is extracted from the Cooling System Charge Kit VAS6096 coolant reservoir by pressure in the coolant system and the system is filled.
-- Remove the Cooling System Charge Kit VAS6096 from the Cooling System Tester - Adapter VAG1274/8 on coolant expansion tank.
-- Connect the Cooling System Tester - Adapter VAG1274/10 to the Cooling System Tester - Adapter VAG1274/8.
-- Remove the seal -3-.
-- Open the clips -1- and remove the plenum chamber cover -2-.
-- Move the high voltage cable to the side.
-- Loosen the coolant hose to the heat exchanger and pull it back until the connection no longer covers the bleeder hole in the coolant hose -arrow-.
-- Fill the coolant until it escapes from the coolant hose bleeder hole.
-- Slide the coolant hose onto the connection and secure with a spring clamp.
-- Open the bleeder screw -arrow-.
-- Fill the coolant until it starts to escape on the Electric Drive Power and Control Electronics -JX1-.
-- Close the bleeder screw -arrow-, refer to Figure.
-- If the vehicle has a parking heater, switch it on for about 30 seconds.
-- Close coolant reservoir cap.
Working with the ignition turned on or with the high voltage system energized
When working on vehicles with the ignition already switched on or that are ready to drive there is a danger of the engine starting unexpectedly and of being poisoned by gas in enclosed areas. Risk of body parts and/or clothing being clamped or pulled.
Perform the following before switching on the ignition:
- Move the selector lever into P.
- Activate the parking brake
- Turn off the ignition.
- Open the hood
- Connect Battery Charger VAS5095A to the battery jump start terminal.
- Turn on the ignition.
-- In order to minimize the number of automatic engine starts while performing testing and measurements, charge the vehicle batteries with Battery Charger 60A VAS5904 in battery support mode, refer to Battery Charger VAS5900 SUPPORT MODE and refer to HIGH VOLTAGE SYSTEM GENERAL WARNINGS , HIGH VOLTAGE VEHICLES SAFETY PRECAUTIONS and WORKING ON HIGH VOLTAGE VEHICLES for hybrid vehicles .
-- If performing testing and measuring when the vehicles is in the ready mode or when the ignition is on, move the selector lever into "P", set the parking brake and keep all tools away from moving engine parts.
If performing testing and measuring when the ignition must be on but vehicle must not be in the ready mode, move the selector lever into "P" and set the parking brake.
The ready mode appears in the Instrument Cluster Control Module -J285- via the "power meter", refer to the Owner's Manual.
Activate and deactivate the ready mode, refer to the Owner's Manual (watch the display in the Instrument Cluster Control Module -J285- while doing this).
- The ignition is turned on and the ready mode is activated, the engine starts or only runs when warm coolant is needed in order to the reach the set temperature inside the passenger compartment or, for example, the Traction Battery -A2- (hybrid battery) is inadequately charged.
- The ignition is on and the temperature is set to "warm" on the Air Conditioning (A/C) display control head, the Climatronic Control Module -J255- ("HI" appears in the display in the A/C control head and in the MMI).
-- Start the engine.
-- Press the AC button to turn off the A/C compressor.
- The LED in the button must not come on.
-- Run the engine at 2000 RPM for 3 minutes.
-- Allow engine to run at idle until both large coolant hoses on the radiator are warm.
-- Run the engine at 2000 RPM for 2 minutes.
-- Turn off engine and allow it to cool off.
-- Install the noise insulation, refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
-- Check the coolant level.
