A/C System And Refrigerant R134A Safety Precautions
Vehicles with a High Voltage System (Hybrid Vehicles)
Read and follow all of the supplemental warnings for all work performed on vehicles with the high voltage system. Refer to WARNINGS WHEN WORKING ON VEHICLES WITH HIGH VOLTAGE SYSTEM and HIGH VOLTAGE SYSTEM GENERAL WARNINGS for CAEB & CAED Engines, HIGH VOLTAGE SYSTEM GENERAL WARNINGS for CPMA & CPMB Engines or HIGH VOLTAGE SYSTEM GENERAL WARNINGS for CCBA, CGXC & CTUB .
Risk of unintended engine start
The ignition must be turned off and the ignition key must remain outside of the vehicle when working on vehicles with a high voltage system.
Handling high voltage cables:
- Do not stand on or place tools on high voltage cables and their components as it may damage the cable insulation.
- Never bend or kink high voltage cables forcefully as it may damage the cable insulation.
- The round high voltage connectors are color coded with an external color ring and are mechanically coded using the guide- or code tabs. Always make certain that the coding matches when connecting the round connector in order to avoid any mechanical damage the high voltage connector.
There is a risk of electrocution from damaged high voltage components.
Observe the following when working around high voltage components and high voltage wires:
- Never work around high voltage components and cables with cutting, deformed, or sharp edged tools, or heat sources such as welding or soldering tools, heated air, and thermal glue.
- Inspect the high voltage components visually before beginning.
- Perform a visual inspection of the Electric Drive Power and Control Electronics -JX1-, the Electro-Drive Drive Motor -V141-, the Electrical A/C Compressor -V470- and the high voltage lines when working in the engine compartment.
- Perform a visual inspection of the high voltage lines and covers when working on the underbody.
- Perform a visual inspection of the high voltage lines and the Electrobox with the High Voltage System Maintenance Connector -TW- when working in the luggage compartment.
- Perform a visual inspection on all of the potential equalization cables.
Observe the following items when performing the visual inspection:
- The components do not display any signs of external damage.
- The high voltage cable insulation and the potential equalization cables are not damaged.
- The high voltage cables do not display any abnormal deformations.
- Every high voltage component is marked with a red warning label.
Vehicles with Start/Stop System
On vehicles with the Start/Stop System, the engine could start automatically and cause serious personal injury.
- If the Start/Stop System is activated (recognizable by a message in the instrument cluster), it is possible to start the engine automatically.
- Make sure the Start/Stop System is deactivated when working on the vehicle (switch off ignition and turn on again as needed).
All Vehicles
Asphyxiation, frostbite, and poisoning may occur as a result of leaking refrigerant
There is a risk of injury associated with leaking refrigerant
- The surrounding air may be displaced causing asphyxiation
- There is a risk of frostbite (for example a risk of freezer burn from the evaporating liquid refrigerant)
- There is a risk of poisoning from the byproducts
Corrective action
- Work on refrigerant system should only be performed in ventilated areas (workshops).
- When handling refrigerant and working on the refrigerant circuit, make sure there is a good flow of oxygen (change the air at least one time each hour in the work area and three times per hour in enclosed spaces (for example, the work pit). Turn on the existing workshop ventilation and exhaust systems.
- Only store containers and systems with refrigerant in well ventilated areas (for example, not in basements or near basement staircases).
- Do not breathe in fumes from leaking refrigerant.
- When handling refrigerant and when working on the refrigerant circuit, wear suitable protective gloves and protective glasses.
- It is recommended to have an eye-flushing bottle available.
- Work on refrigerant system should only be performed in ventilated areas (workshops). Switch on existing ventilation systems.
- Refrigerant must not be stored in low-lying areas such as basements or in their entry ways or windowsills.
First Aid Measures
- If the affected person has inhaled a high concentration of refrigerant vapors, immediately remove them from the contaminated area and bring and lay them in the fresh air. Keep the affected person warm and calm. Initiate artificial respiration if the affected person is experiencing troubled breathing and administrate oxygen if necessary. If the affected person has difficulty breathing or cannot breathe, tip head back and perform mouth to mouth respiration. Consult a physician.
- If liquid refrigerant has come in contact with your skin and eyes, immediately flush with cool water for 15 minutes. Afterwards instill eye drops and consult a doctor immediately, even when the eyes are not hurting.
- Never put anything in the mouth of an unconscious person. If the symptoms continue or if ever there is a concern, seek medical advice.
- The doctor must be informed that the injury was caused by refrigerant R 134a. Should refrigerant come into contact with other parts of the body despite compliance with safety regulations, these must likewise be rinsed immediately for at least 15 minutes with cold or lukewarm water.
- Following contact with eyes or mucous membranes, immediately rinse with copious amounts of running water and consult an eye specialist.
- Immediately remove clothing that has come into contact with refrigerant and rinse the area of the skin affected with cold or lukewarm water. Do not use hot water. If frostbite occurs, contact a physician.
The refrigerant has a faintly noticeable odor which is therefore not perceptible.
The refrigerant is heavier than air and falls to lower lying areas such as the work pit, basements, and deep spots and displaces the breathable air and oxygen. Remaining in oxygen deprived areas is life endangering.
Liquid refrigerant, for example, from a leak evaporates at an ambient pressure of approximately 1 bar (14.5 psi) at roughly -29.4 °C (-20.9 °F). If the refrigerant evaporates on your skin, it can cause cryogenic burning. Delicate organs, such as the cornea, are especially at risk. Excessive frostbite may be life threatening.
The refrigerant breaks down near flames or when it comes in contact with hot surfaces. There is a danger of becoming poisoned by the resulting toxic fumes if inhaled. A pungent odor indicates that the products of the decomposition mentioned above have already formed. Avoid inhaling these substances under all circumstances, as otherwise the respiratory system, lungs and other organs could be damaged.
Do not attempt repair on filled air conditioning systems by soldering, brazing or welding. This pertains also for welding and soldering work on the vehicle, in the event that parts of the climate control system may heat up When performing paintwork repairs, the temperature in the drying booth or preheating zone must not exceed 80 °C (176 °F).
Reason:
Exposure to heat increases the pressure in the system, which could cause the pressure relief valve to open.
Corrective measure:
-- Discharge refrigerant circuit using service station.
Always replace damaged or leaking A/C system components. Do not attempt to repair them by soldering, brazing or welding.
Refrigerant containers (for example, charging cylinders of A/C service station) must never be subjected to excessive heat or exposed to direct sunlight.
Corrective measure:
-- Containers must never be completely filled with liquid refrigerant. Without sufficient room for expansion (gas cushion), containers will rupture with devastating effect in the event of an increase in temperature. Refer to REFRIGERANT R134A CHARACTERISTICS .
Refrigerant is never to be transferred to systems or containers in which air is present.
Corrective action:
-- Evacuate systems and containers before charging with refrigerant.
