Brake pads, removing and installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench V.A.G 1331
Torque wrench V.A.G 1410
Brake pedal actuator V.A.G 1869/2
Piston resetting tool T10145

Torque wrench V.A.G 1332

Removing

NOTE:

Mark brake pads when removing them if they are to be reused. Reinstall in their original position to prevent uneven braking.
The brake disc is secured with a Torx bolt.

Raise vehicle.
Remove wheels.
The brake disc is secured with a Torx bolt. - 1 -.

Use a screwdriver to pry off brake pad retaining spring from brake caliper housing and remove.

Disconnect connector for brake pad wear indicator.
Turn connector 90° while using a screwdriver to release connector from bracket.
Pull connector upward out of bracket and detach wire.

Detach brake line from retainer.

Remove protective caps - 1 -.

Unfasten and remove both guide pins from brake caliper.
Remove brake caliper housing and lay to one side so that the weight of the brake caliper does not stress or damage the brake hose.
Take brake pads out of brake caliper housing or from brake carrier.

Use methylated spirits to clean the brake caliper housing.

Installing

Press piston back into caliper housing.

NOTE:

Press piston back into the cylinder with resetting tool, before inserting new brake pads. Draw off brake fluid from the reservoir with a bleeder bottle before pressing piston back. Otherwise brake fluid which was used to top off brake fluid reservoir, may run out and cause damage.

CAUTION: Brake fluid is poisonous and must never be extracted by mouth using a hose!

Insert brake pad with retaining spring and wear indicator into brake caliper housing (piston).

Install outer brake pad - 2 - onto brake caliper.

NOTE:

Insert brake pads into brake caliper and install assembly on brake carrier/brake disc.

Secure brake caliper housing to brake carrier with both guide pins (tighten to 30 Nm).
Make sure not to twist the brake hose when installing.
Install both protective caps.
Insert retaining spring into brake caliper housing.

Attach brake line
Connect wear indicator connector and insert wire in dust cap and protective cap.
Installing wheels → 44 - WHEELS, TIRES, VEHICLE ALIGNMENT

NOTE:

After inserting the retaining spring into the two holes, press it under the brake carrier. If incorrectly installed, it is not possible to adjust the wear of the outer pad, and the pedal travel will be increased as a result.
After installing the brake pads, depress pedal firmly several times with the vehicle stationary, so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.

Check brake fluid level and top up if necessary.
