Brake pads, removing and installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench V.A.G 1331
Torque wrench V.A.G 1410
Brake pedal actuator V.A.G 1869/2
Piston resetting tool T10145

Torque wrench V.A.G 1332

Removing

NOTE:

Mark brake pads when removing them if they are to be reused. Reinstall in their original position to prevent uneven braking.

Remove wheels.

On vehicles equipped with a brake pad wear indicator, disconnect connector - 1 -.
Lift locating lug slightly on lower part of connector - 2 - and turn 90°.
Pull connector lower part out of bracket.
Raise vehicle.

Remove wheels.

Swing brake caliper housing upward and remove brake pads.

Press piston back into caliper housing.

NOTE:

Press piston back into the cylinder with resetting tool, before inserting new brake pads. Before pressing the piston back, draw off brake fluid from the reservoir with a bleeder bottle. Otherwise, fluid can overflow and cause damage, particularly if reservoir has been topped off.

CAUTION: Brake fluid is poisonous and must never be extracted by mouth using a hose!

Installing

Use methylated spirits to clean brake caliper housing.

Install brake pads.
Swing brake caliper housing down and tighten securing bolt to 30 Nm.

NOTE:

The repair kit includes four self-locking hex bolts which must be installed.
After replacing brake pads, depress brake pedal firmly several times with vehicle stationary so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.

Mount wheels → 44 - WHEELS, TIRES, VEHICLE ALIGNMENT
Check brake fluid level and top off if necessary.
