Gear oil in front final drive, checking

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Drip tray VAG1306
- Plug insert 3247 (8mm)
Procedure
- Warm up gear oil in front final drive to approx. 60 ° C by performing a short road test.
- Drive vehicle onto a 4-column lift or over a work pit.
NOTE:
- The vehicle must be on a level surface.
- Place drip tray VAG1306 underneath.
- Remove locking screw (arrow).
NOTE:
- Loosen locking bolt using an angled socket-head wrench, but do not use hex ball socket 3247. For improved accessibility it may be necessary to remove the heat shield and drive axle and to set them aside.
- If hex ball socket 3247 is used for loosening the bolt, it could be destroyed.
- With engine switched off, allow gear oil to drip out for approx. 2 minutes.
Oil level is correct when the front final drive is filled up to lower edge of oil filler hole.
- Let excessive gear oil drain or top up gear oil → Gear oil in front final drive, filling up after servicing .
NOTE:
- Replace locking screw with seal.
- When the oil level is correct, tighten locking bolt using hex ball socket 3247 (8mm socket) to 30 Nm.
