SUBFRAME, Removing And Installing: Removing
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
The subframe is removed using the scissor lift table. Front mounting points of engine carrier must be secured using shorter bolts. The subframe is removed together with: the steering gear, the front final drive, the control arms and the wheel bearing housings. The air spring damper/steel spring damper and the upper control arm remain in the vehicle.
Vehicles With An Air Spring Shock Absorber
-- Activate the vehicle lift mode and place the vehicle on the lifting platform. Refer to VEHICLE LIFT MODE .
Continuation For All vehicles
-- Loosen the wheel bolts.
-- Raise the vehicle.
-- Remove the front wheels.
Vehicles With An Air Spring Shock Absorber
-- Fill the air spring shock absorber with the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
Continuation For All Vehicles
-- Clamp off the suction hose at the power steering fluid reservoir -2-.
- Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm:3094
-- Attach the Tensioner Hooks (2 pc.):VW552 -1- to both sides of the vehicle in the upper opening of the wheel housing and the upper control arm.
-- Slightly pretension the control arm so that the control arm ball stud is not damaged.
-- Remove the upper brake line bracket -1- from the wheel bearing housing -arrow-.
-- Pull the harness connector -1- and cable out of the bracket -3-.
-- Remove the bolt -2- and the lower line hose bracket -3- from the wheel bearing housing.
-- Loosen the nut of the upper control arm, but do not unscrew yet.
To protect thread, screw nut on pin a few turns.
-- Press out the upper control arm.
- Puller - Ball Joint:T10187
-- In the wheel housing disconnect the brake hoses from the brake lines.
-- Clamp off the return line.
- Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm:3094
-- Remove the noise insulation below the engine/transmission. Refer to NOISE INSULATION .
-- Release and disconnect the harness connector -1- from the Servotronic Solenoid Valve -N119-.
-- Remove the brackets for the hydraulic lines -1-.
-- Remove pressure line and return line -2- from steering gear.
-- Disconnect all electrical wires from body to axle.
-- Disconnect the driveshaft from the front final drive and tie up. Refer to FRONT FINAL DRIVE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [For transmission(s) 0C8] .
-- If equipped, remove screws -arrows-.
-- Remove heat shield -1- on steering gear -2-.
-- Turn the steering gear to the right to the stop.
-- Remove the bolt -arrow- of the universal joint -1-.
-- Remove the universal joint -1- from the power steering gear -2-.
-- Install the supports on the Scissor Lift Table:VAS6131B as shown in the figure.

-- Support the subframe with the scissor lift table.

-- Unscrew the bolt -1- for the shock absorber -2- on the control arm.
-- Remove the left and right coupling rod from the stabilizer bar -1-.
-- For securing the subframe on vehicles with V6 engines. Refer to SUBFRAME, SECURING, VEHICLES WITH V6 ENGINES .
-- For securing the subframe on vehicles with V8 engines. Refer to SUBFRAME, SECURING, VEHICLES WITH V8 ENGINES .
-- Remove the front bolts -1- for the subframe.
-- Lower the subframe -1- approximately 50 mm with the Scissor Lift Table:VAS6131B .
-- Screw in two bolts M14 x 1.5 x 90, for example Bolts:N 104 281 01 to secure the engine carrier to the body on the left and right -2-.
-- Carefully pull the vent line from the front final drive.
-- Slowly lower the subframe while ensuring freedom of movement.
