Overview - Piston And Connecting Rod: Notes

  1. Bolts
    • 50 Nm + 90° additional turn
    • Replace
    • Lubricate the threads and contact surface.
    • Use old bolts to measure the radial clearance. Tighten to 50 Nm, but do not turn further
  2. Connecting Rod Bearing Cap
    • Mark for installation later
    • Mark the allocation to the cylinder with paint. Refer to Figure
    • Installation position of the connecting rod pairs. Refer to Figure
  3. Bearing Shells
    • Make sure the tabs are secure.
    • Mark used bearing shells for reinstallation but not on the running surface
    • Radial play, measuring. Refer to CONNECTING RODS, CHECKING RADIAL CLEARANCE .
    • For reworked connecting rod pins, oversized bearings are available. Refer to the Parts Information..
    • The connecting rod tabs are above each other
  4. Connecting Rod
    • Always replace as a set.
    • Mark the allocation to the cylinder with paint. Refer to Figure
    • Installation position of the connecting rod pairs. Refer to Figure
    • Axial play for each new connecting rod pair: 0.20 to 0.45 mm
    • Radial play, measuring. Refer to CONNECTING RODS, CHECKING RADIAL CLEARANCE .
  5. Circlip
    • Replace
  6. Piston Pin
    • If difficult to move, warm the piston up to approximately 60 °C (140 °F)
    • Remove and install using the Pilot Drift:VW222A 
  7. Piston
    • Mark the installation position and cylinder allocation. Refer to Figure
    • Check. Refer to Figure.
    • Install with piston ring compressor
    • Checking the cylinder bore. Refer to Figure.
  8. Piston Rings
    • Offset gaps by 120°
    • Use piston ring pliers for removing and installing
    • Installed position: "TOP" marking or side with writing faces the piston crown.
    • Measuring the gap. Refer to Figure
    • Measuring side clearance. Refer to Figure
