Exhaust System, Installing Without Tension

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

WARNING:

When doing any repair work, especially in the engine compartment, pay attention to the following due to clearance issues:

  • Route lines of all types (for example for fuel, hydraulic, EVAP canister system, coolant and refrigerant, brake fluid, vacuum) and electrical wiring so that the original path is followed.
  • Ensure sufficient clearance to all moving or hot components.
NOTE:

After exhaust system repairs, make sure exhaust system is not under stress and that it has sufficient clearance from the bodywork. If necessary, loosen double clamps and clamp and align exhaust pipe so that sufficient clearance is maintained to the bodywork and support rings carry uniform loads.

Replace the self-locking nuts.

-- Loosen the screws on the front clamping sleeves.

-- If present, loosen the threaded connections on the rear clamping sleeves.

-- Press exhaust system forward -arrow- under the following tensions are adjusted on the individual retaining loops:

-- Hold exhaust system in this position and tighten clamping sleeve screws evenly.

NOTE:

A 2nd technician is needed to align the exhaust system with clamping sleeves between center and rear mufflers.

If all adjustment dimensions are not achieved, remove affected bracket from body and shift accordingly.

-- Align the tail pipes. Refer to TAIL PIPES, REPLACING - Attach end pipe to rear muffler and align. .
