Coolant, Filling

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2012 Volkswagen Touareg and 2011 Volkswagen Touareg. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Special Tools And Workshop Equipment Required

WARNING:

Risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant.

  • The coolant system is under pressure when the engine is warm.
  • Cover the coolant reservoir cap with a cloth and then open it slowly to release the pressure.
NOTE:

The water portion of the coolant influences the effectiveness of the coolant. Volkswagen has decided to define the water quality used in the cooling system based on the different mixtures and country and regional requirements. Use distilled water. For this reason, we recommend using distilled water for older models when adding coolant or filling coolant for the first time. On newer models (from MY 2010), distilled water is required.

CAUTION:

Only mix distilled water with coolant additives. Using distilled water provides optimum corrosion protection.

NOTE:

Only use coolant additive G 12 Plus that conforms to TL VW774 G.

Use distilled water only.

Coolant additives with the note "conforming to TL VW774 G" prevent frost, corrosion damage and scaling. The boiling point will be raised. The cooling system must be filled with coolant additive year-round.

Because of its high boiling point, the coolant contributes to engine reliability under heavy loads, particularly in countries with tropical climates.

Freeze protection down to approximately -25 °C (-13 °F) must be guaranteed. Freeze protection down to approximately -35 °C (-31 °F) in cold climate countries

The coolant concentration must not be reduced by adding water even in warmer seasons and in warmer countries. The coolant additive portion must be at least 40%.

If a lower freeze protection is necessary due to the climatic conditions, increase the amount of coolant additive. Only up to 60% (freeze protection down to approximately -40 °C (-40 °F)). Otherwise the freeze protection is lessened and the cooling effect will be diminished.

The Refractometer:T10007  is recommended for determining the current anti-freeze density.

Do not reuse used coolant.

RECOMMENDED MIXTURE RATIOS:

Frost Protection to Freeze Protection Portion
-25 °C (-13 °F) -35 °C (-31 °F) 40 % 50 %

*) The quantity of coolant can vary depending upon the vehicle equipment.

-- Make sure all connections are closed.

-- Fill the container on the Cooling System Charge Kit:VAS6096  with at least 17 liters of premixed coolant with the proper mixture ratio.

-- Install the Cooling System Tester - Adapter:VAG1274/8  on the coolant expansion tank.

-- Install the Cooling System Charge Kit:VAS6096  on the Cooling System Tester - Adapter:VAG1274/8  .

-- Place the air outlet hose -1- in a small container -2-.

NOTE:

A small amount of coolant which should be collected is drawn off with the discharged air.

-- Close valves -A and B- by turning lever at a right angle to direction of flow.

-- Connect the hose -3- to compressed air.

-- Open valve -B- by turning level in direction of flow.

-- Briefly open valve -A- by turning lever in the flow direction so that hose on the Cooling System Charge Kit:VAS6096  container fills with coolant.

-- Close valve -A- again.

-- Leave valve -B- open another two minutes.

-- Close valve -B-.

NOTE:

If pressure falls, check coolant system for leaks.

-- Remove pressurized air hose.

-- Open the valve -A- slowly.

-- Remove the Cooling System Charge Kit:VAS6096  from the Cooling System Charge Kit - Adapter:VAS6096/8  on coolant expansion tank.

-- Check the coolant level inside the reservoir. Either fill or extract to the "MAX" marking, if necessary.

-- Check the coolant freeze point. Refer to FILL QUALITY, CHECKING .
