Driver Side Airbag Unit, Removing And Installing: Removing

WARNING:

-- Adjust steering wheel height to the lowest position.

-- Adjust the steering wheel depth so that it is in the fully extended position.

-- Turn the steering wheel to the position shown in the figure.

-- Insert a screwdriver into the hole on the rear side of the steering wheel to the stop (approx. 8 mm).

-- Turn the screwdriver in the direction of the driver door -arrow-. This releases the airbag latch on the right steering wheel side.

-- After the latch is released, pull the airbag unit on the upper edge out of the steering wheel bezel.

-- Turn the steering wheel 180°. The catch for the airbag unit on the left side of the steering wheel unlocks as described.

-- After the latch is released, pull the airbag unit again on the upper edge out of the steering wheel bezel.

-- Turn the steering wheel back 90° to the center position.

-- Switch the ignition on.

-- Disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY .

-- Turn the steering wheel back 90° to the center position.

-- Detach the airbag unit from the steering wheel.

WARNING:

Electrostatic discharges can lead to unintended deployment of the airbag. Therefore the technician must discharge static electricity from the body before separating the ignition and ground wiring. This is done, for example, by briefly grasping the chassis or door striker.

-- Release the connector lock in the direction of the -arrow- and remove the airbag connector -1-.

-- Disconnect the harness connector in the area of the "6 o'clock steering wheel spoke".
