Gear Oil, Draining And Filling, Transmission With Combined Oil System

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler Kit VAS6617
Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit VAS6622
Protective eyewear

Draining

Gear oil temperature: approximately 20 °C (68 °F) (room temperature).
The engine must be switched off when working.
Move the vehicle onto a four-column shop hoist or over a work pit so it is completely level.
The transmission must be still for at least 15 minutes to make sure the oil settles internally.
Transmission in "P".
The parking brake button should be activated to close the electro-mechanical parking brake.
Tightening specification, refer to OVERVIEW - DRAIN AND INSPECTION PLUGS FOR GEAR OIL .

NOTE:

General repair instructions, refer to GENERAL REPAIR INFORMATION .

Pay attention to clean working conditions for the transmission, refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS, GUIDELINES .

Follow the disposal requirements.

Replace the ATF drain plug and seal.

Replace the plug for the ATF check and fill hole.

-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit VAS6617 under the transmission.

WARNING:

Danger of eye injury.

Wear protective eyewear.

NOTE:

Place a cloth over the tunnel crossmember to prevent axle oil from getting into the cast pockets on the top.

-- Remove the drain plug -arrow B- from the front final drive and drain the transmission fluid.

-- Tighten the new drain plug on the front final drive -arrow B-.

-- Remove the drain plug -arrow B- from the center differential housing and drain the transmission fluid.

-- Tighten the new drain plug on the center differential housing -arrow B-.

Filling and Adjusting

Gear oil temperature: approximately 20 °C (68 °F) (room temperature).

-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN372500 under the transmission.

-- Remove the plug -arrow A- from the front final drive.

-- Install the Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler - Adapter 6 VAS6617/6 with Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler - Adapter 2 VAS6617/2 hand-tight in the inspection hole for front final drive, and fill the front final drive with approximately 1.0 liters of gear oil.

Gear oil specification, allocate correct fluid.

-- Wait five minutes.

NOTE:

A waiting time of at least 5 minutes is required so that the internal oil level between the differential and oil fill space can equalize.

-- Remove Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler - Adapter 6 VAS6617/6 from the transmission and let any extra oil drain out.

-- Install the old plug.

-- Remove the drain plug -arrow A- from the center differential housing.

-- Install the Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler - Adapter 6 VAS6617/6 with Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler - Adapter 2 VAS6617/2 hand-tight in the transfer case -Arrow A- inspection hole, and fill the transfer case with approximately 1.0 liters of gear oil.

Gear oil specification, allocate correct fluid.

-- Wait five minutes.

NOTE:

The inside of the transfer case is divided into several oil chambers. The chambers must be filled equally.

A waiting time of at least 5 minutes is required so that the internal oil level between the center differential and oil fill space can equalize.

-- Remove Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler - Adapter 6 VAS6617/6 from the transmission and let any extra oil drain out.

-- Install the old plug.

-- Perform a road test for 10 to 15 minutes.

NOTE:

The fluid distributes evenly during the road test.

-- Check the gear oil level, and fill, refer to ATF LEVEL, CHECKING, TRANSMISSION WITH COMBINED OIL SYSTEM .
