Gear Oil, Draining And Filling, Front Final Drive

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN372500
Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler Kit VAS6617
Protective eyewear

Draining

The engine is off.
Move the vehicle onto a four-column workshop hoist or over a work pit so it is completely level.
Gear oil temperature: approximately 20 °C (68 °F) (room temperature).
Tightening specifications, refer to OVERVIEW - TRANSMISSION DRAIN AND INSPECTION PLUG FOR GEAR OIL .

NOTE:

General repair instructions, refer to GENERAL REPAIR INFORMATION .

Clean working conditions for the automatic transmission, refer to GUIDELINES FOR CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .

Follow the disposal requirements.

Replace the ATF drain plug and seal.

Replace the plug for the ATF check and fill hole.

-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN372500 under the transmission.

WARNING:

Danger of eye injury.

Wear protective eyewear.

-- Remove the drain plug -arrow B- from the front final drive and drain the transmission fluid.

CAUTION:

Danger of causing damage to the transmission.

Do not start the engine if there is no transmission oil in the front final drive.

-- Install the new drain plug -arrow B-.

Filling

Gear oil temperature: approximately 20 °C (68 °F) (room temperature).
Tightening specification, refer to OVERVIEW - TRANSMISSION DRAIN AND INSPECTION PLUG FOR GEAR OIL .

-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN372500 under the transmission.

WARNING:

Danger of eye injury.

Wear protective eyewear.

-- Remove the drain plug -arrow A- from the front final drive.

-- Install the Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler - Adapter 6 VAS6617/6 with Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler - Adapter 2 VAS6617/2 in the transmission hand tight.

-- Connect the Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler Kit VAS6617 and fill the front final drive with approximately 0.9 liters (0.95 quarts) of gear oil.

Transmission fluid, allocate correct fluid.

-- Wait five minutes.

NOTE:

A filling time of at least five minutes is required so that the internal oil level between the differential and oil fill space can equalize.

-- Remove the Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler - Adapter 6 VAS6617/6 from the transmission and let any extra oil drain out.

Specified value: the oil level is correct when the front final drive is filled to the lower edge of the filler hole. If needed, fill the gear oil again.

-- Tighten the new drain plug -arrow A- for the front final drive.

NOTE:

It is not necessary to check the oil level again at this stage.
