Camshaft, Measuring Radial Clearance

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

• Plastigage®

Procedure 

-- Remove the camshafts, refer to CAMSHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Mark the assignment of the roller rocker lever for installation later.

-- Remove the roller rocker lever and place it on a clean surface.

-- Clean the bearing and the bearing journals.

-- Place Plastigage® over entire width of bearing journal or into bearing.

• Plastigage® must rest in center of bearing.

-- Reinstall the camshaft with bearing caps and fasten with the old bolts, do not turn the camshaft.

• Cylinder bank 1 (right) bearing cap - tightening specification and sequence, refer to Figure
• Cylinder bank 2 (left) bearing cap - tightening specification and sequence, refer to Figure

-- Remove the camshafts with the bearing caps again.

-- Compare width of Plastigage® with calibrated scale.

Radial clearance:

• New: 0.037 to 0.063 mm.
