Camshaft Timing Chain, Removing From Camshafts: Removing

Engine and transmission installed.

NOTE:

If working only on cylinder head bank 1 (right), the timing chain guard must not be removed from the cylinder head bank 2 (left).

-- Remove the upper timing chain covers, refer to TIMING CHAIN COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Join the tools as illustrated.

CAUTION:

Components could be destroyed by the camshaft timing chains jumping off.

Turn crankshaft only in direction of engine rotation -arrow-.

-- Turn the crankshaft until the vibration damper is at Top Dead Center (TDC).

The attached marking -arrow- stands vertically upward.

NOTE:

The Camshaft Adjustment Pins T40060 has a flat part -2- which makes it easier to insert if the holes on the camshaft and the cylinder head are slightly offset.

Insert the pin so that the bolt -1- is perpendicular to the camshaft axle.

Move the bolt -1- 90° in direction of -arrow- so that it is perpendicular to the camshaft axle and it is possible to attain the correct "TDC" position.

-- Check whether camshafts of both cylinder heads stand at "TDC" position.

It must be possible to secure the camshafts with the Camshaft Adjustment Pins T40060.
The bolt -arrow- in the Camshaft Adjustment Pins T40060 must be perpendicular to the center line of the camshaft on cylinder bank 1 (right).

The bolt -arrow- in the Camshaft Adjustment Pins T40060 must be perpendicular to the center line of the camshaft on cylinder bank 2 (left).

NOTE:

To collect escaping engine oil, place a clean cloth under the upper part of the oil pan.

-- Remove the sealing plug -arrow- from the upper section of the oil pan.

-- Install the Locking Pin For Crankshaft T40237 in the hole and tighten to 20 Nm. Rotate the crankshaft -1- back and forth slightly to center the pin completely, if necessary.

-- Secure the Chain Tensioner Mounting Bracket T40246 as shown in the illustration.

Step	Bolts	Tightening Specification
1.	-1- M6x40	Install all the way in by hand.
2.	-2- M6x20	Install all the way in by hand.
3.	-2- M6x40	8 Nm
4.	-1- M6x20	8 Nm

CAUTION:

Danger of causing damage to the engine.

To prevent small parts from accidentally entering the engine through the openings in the timing chain compartment, cover the opening with a clean cloth.

-- Remove the Camshaft Adjustment Pins T40060 from both camshafts.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.
