Cylinder Head, Removing And Installing: Removing

The engine is installed.

NOTE:

The following information describes how to remove both cylinder heads at the same time.

If only one cylinder head will be removed, follow the applicable instructions in the following description.

When installing, bring all cable ties back to same positions.

WARNING:

There is a risk of injury because the fuel is under very high pressure.

Reduce the fuel pressure down to residual pressure before opening high pressure area of the fuel injection system.

-- Reduce the fuel pressure in the high pressure area, refer to FUEL SUPPLY SYSTEM SAFETY PRECAUTIONS => Releasing Pressure in High Pressure Area .

-- Remove the upper coolant pipe, refer to UPPER COOLANT PIPE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the oil filter housing, refer to OIL FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the intake manifold lower section, refer to INTAKE MANIFOLD LOWER SECTION WITH FUEL RAIL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Disconnect the connectors on the fuel injectors.

-- Remove the affected camshaft timing chain from camshafts, refer to CAMSHAFT TIMING CHAIN, REMOVING FROM CAMSHAFTS .

-- Remove the Locking Pin T40071 from the left cylinder head.

-- Remove the bolts -1- and -2- and then remove the chain tensioner on the right cylinder head.

NOTE:

The Locking Pin T40071 remains inserted.

NOTE:

Ignore item -2- and -arrows-.

-- Disconnect the connectors from the left cylinder head.

1 - for Camshaft Position Sensor 2 -G163-

3 - for Camshaft Adjustment Valve 2 -N208-

-- Move the electrical wiring harness to the side.

-- Disconnect the connector -1- for the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor - G62-.

-- Remove the front coolant pipe bolts -arrows-.

NOTE:

Ignore the -arrows-.

CAUTION:

There is a risk of contamination.

Follow the guidelines for cleanliness when working on the fuel supply system, refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .

-- Press the release buttons and disconnect the fuel hose -1-.

-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set VAS6122.

-- Disconnect the connectors -2- and -3-.

-- Remove left and right bolt -1- for the ground cable.

-- Disconnect the connectors from the right cylinder head.

Camshaft Adjustment Valve 1 -N205-
Camshaft Position Sensor -G40-

-- Move the electrical wiring harness to the side.

NOTE:

Ignore the -arrows-.

-- Remove the screw -arrow- and remove the oil dipstick and guide tube.

-- Open the clamp -1- and remove the vacuum hose from the vacuum pump.

Only for the Right Cylinder Head

-- Remove the upper coolant pipe, refer to UPPER COOLANT PIPE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- on the rear of the cylinder head.

Left cylinder head: 3 bolts.
Right cylinder head: 4 bolts.

NOTE:

Different camshafts may be installed depending on the date of manufacture

Camshafts with wrench clearance have notches -arrows- ; the cylinder head bolts can be removed without further preliminary work.

Camshafts without notches must be removed (refer to CAMSHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING ) before the cylinder head bolts can be removed.

-- Loosen the cylinder head bolts in the sequence -1 to 8- .

-- Remove the bolts, remove the cylinder head and place it on a soft surface (foam).
