Axial and radial play, measuring

Axial clearance

- Attach dial indicator together with VW387 dial gauge holder to cylinder block and set indicator against crankshaft counterweight.
- Press crankshaft against dial indicator by hand, set indicator to 0.
- Press crankshaft away from dial indicator.
- Read clearance.

Radial clearance
NOTE:
- Never interchange used bearing shells.
- Bearing shells that are worn through the nickel coating must be replaced
Required equipment
- Plastigage
- Remove main bearing caps. Clean bearing caps and journals.
- Place Plastigage over entire width of bearing journal or into bearing shells.
- Plastigage must rest in center of bearing shell
- Install main bearing caps and tighten to 30 Nm. DO NOT turn crankshaft.
- Remove main bearing caps again.
- Compare width of Plastigage with calibrated scale.
- Read clearance.
