Battery Interrupt Igniter N253, removing and installing (depending on vehicle equipment)

CAUTION: Battery Interrupt Igniters -N253 are pyrotechnic components. The same safety measures apply as with airbags. Observe safety precautions for work on airbags → Airbag safety precautions .

NOTE:

If the Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K75 lights up after an accident, check using whether crash data have been stored. If this is the case, check in DTC memory whether for Battery Interrupt Igniter -N253 there is entered the DTC 001 Resistance too large. If this is the case, Battery Interrupt Igniter -N253 must be replaced.

Removing

Clamp off ground wire at battery with ignition switched off →
- 27 BATTERY, STARTER, GENERATOR, CRUISE CONTROL
- 27 - BATTERY, STARTER, GENERATOR, CRUISE CONTROL for ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT - GENERAL INFORMATION
.
Remove left luggage compartment side trim → Luggage compartment side trim, removing and installing .
Loosen quick-release screws - 1 - and - 3 - and open flap - 2 - of main fuse box in luggage compartment - arrow -.

Remove nuts - 1 - and - 3 - from B+ wires.
Remove Battery Interrupt Igniter N253 - item 2 - from retainer.

CAUTION: Before disconnecting electrical connection, technician must discharge electrostatic energy. To do this, briefly touch door lock, for example.

Disconnect electrical connector - 4 -.

To do so, release connector lock - 2 - using a screwdriver until it stops - arrow -, this disengages the electrical harness connector - 1 - and it can be disconnected.

NOTE:

Observe disposal of pyrotechnic airbag units → Caring for pyrotechnic airbag units

Installing

CAUTION: Battery Interrupt Igniters -N253 are pyrotechnic components. The same safety measures apply as with airbags. Observe safety precautions for work on airbags → Airbag safety precautions .

Installation is reverse of removal, but note the following:

When connecting electrical connector, ensure it engages securely and locking mechanism is OK.
Follow the specified tightening torques → Tightening torques .
Switch on ignition.

CAUTION: No one should be in vehicle when connecting battery.

Connect battery. Necessary measures →

Follow measures after connecting battery →

Finally, check DTC memory for airbag control module using and process if necessary.
