Flange shaft oil seal, replacing

Special tools and workshop equipment required

VW 295 Needle bearing drift
VW 681 Extractor lever
2062 Driver
T10037 Puller

VAG 1331 Torque wrench
VAG 1332 Torque wrench

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

NOTE:

Removal procedure is identical for left and right seals.
Exhaust system does not have to be removed.

Removing

Turn steering to full left lock.

Remove cover plates over right drive shaft (arrows 1 and 2).
If installed, remove cover plate over left drive shaft.
Unbolt drive shaft from flange on transmission:
Tie up drive shaft as high as possible. Do not damage paint on drive shaft.

Place drip tray VAG 1306 underneath the transmission.

When replacing left oil seal:

Remove left flange shaft.

Remove flange shaft; by screwing puller T10037 to differential cover (arrow).

When replacing right oil seal:

Remove flange shaft, by screwing puller T10037 to transmission housing (arrow).

Always replace flange shaft circlip.

Clamp flange shaft in vice using soft jaws. Press out old circlip from groove in flange shaft use new circlip -A-.
Pull out flange shaft oil seal with VW 681.

Assembling flange shaft with polygon bearing

1 - Flange shaft

2 - Needle bearing (polygon bearing)

3 - Spacer ring

4 - Circlip

5 - Spacer ring - installed on shafts with 30 mm spline diameter

NOTE:

Rough running of the polygon bearings with flange shaft removed, does not indicate bearings are defective. An acoustic test can only be performed when installed.
Inspect for signs of damage to polygon bearings (such as cracking in outer race).
The polygon bearings can only be replaced together with flange shaft.
A spacer ring -5- is installed between the polygon bearing and large differential bevel gear on flange shafts with 30 mm spline diameter.

Installing

NOTE:

If used flange shaft is used, insert to a depth of 6.5 mm.
Oil seal can also be driven in using drift 2062.

Lightly oil outer circumference of seal.

Keep seal straight when installing. Drive in new oil seal for right flange shaft to a depth of 5.5 mm below outer surface of housing.
Fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with sealing grease G052 128 A1.

Keep seal straight when installing. Drive in new oil seal for left flange shaft to a depth of 5.5 mm below surface of cover.
Drive in flange shaft using mandrel VW 295.
Bolt drive shaft to flange shaft.
Install splash plates for drive shaft.

Check oil level in manual transmission. Refer to Oil level in manual transmission, checking .
