Front Seat, Removing And Installing; Front Seat, Removing With Faulty Seat Forward/Back Adjustment Motor Or Faulty Control Module

Driver Seat Forward/Back Adjustment Motor -V28- / Front Passenger Seat Forward/Back Adjustment Motor -V31- or Memory Seat/Steering Column Adjustment Control Module -J136- / Front Passenger Memory Seat Control Module -J521-, Checking

WARNING:

Follow all safety precautions when working with pyrotechnic components. Refer to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .
Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". For example, this can be done by briefly touching the door striker.

-- Move the seat as high up as possible.

NOTE:

Check electrical and electronic components and wires before removing the seat further to avoid unnecessary repair costs.

-- Perform the following tests:

Check the fuse. Refer to the appropriate Wiring Diagram(s).
Check the voltage at the connector station and perform Fault Finding if necessary. Refer to the appropriate Wiring Diagram(s).
Check the voltage to the control module. Refer to the appropriate Wiring Diagram(s).
Check the voltage to the Seat Forward/Back Adjustment Motor -V288-. Refer to the appropriate Wiring Diagram(s).

-- Replace the fuse if faulty. Refer to the appropriate Wiring Diagram(s).

-- If there is no voltage at the connector station, repair or replace the wire. Refer to the appropriate Wiring Diagram(s).

-- If the seat forward/back adjustment motor is faulty, replace the seat pan lower frame. Refer to SEAT PAN, DISASSEMBLING AND ASSEMBLING, UPPER FRAME .

-- If the control module is faulty: replace Memory Seat/Steering Column Adjustment Control Module -J136- / Front Passenger Memory Seat Control Module -J521-. Refer to MEMORY SEAT/STEERING COLUMN ADJUSTMENT CONTROL MODULE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Removing with faulty Driver Seat Forward/Back Adjustment Motor -V28- /Front Passenger Seat Forward/Back Adjustment Motor -V31-

WARNING:

Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". For example, this can be done by briefly touching the door striker.

-- Switch the ignition on.

-- Disconnect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Disconnect the connectors on the connector station. Refer to CONNECTORS, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Connect the Airbag Adapter. Refer to AIRBAG ADAPTER, CONNECTING AND DISCONNECTING .

-- Remove the screw -3-.

-- Remove the seat position sensor -2- from the seat pan lower frame -1- at the hook and move the wire to the side -arrow-.

-- Disconnect the front seat belt latch connector. Refer to FRONT SEAT BELT LATCH, REMOVING - DISCONNECT THE CONNECTOR -2- AND FREE UP THE WIRE .

-- Disconnect the connector on the seat forward/back adjustment motor.

-- Remove the bolt -3-.

CAUTION:

Danger of damaging the threaded holes or the bushings in the bearing points (connecting the upper and lower frame).

To remove the bolts mentioned in the following, a second technician must be pushing down slightly on the seat backrest.

-- Remove the bolts -2-.

-- With a second technician, detach the seat pan upper frame -1- from the lower frame -4- and remove from the vehicle.

NOTE:

The seat pan is shown without the cushion, cover and backrest in the illustration.

-- Make sure the bushings -1- in the bearing points (upper and lower frame connection) -2- are not damaged.

CAUTION:

The bushings cannot be replaced with workshop materials.
If the bushings are damaged, the corresponding assembly parts must be replaced.

-- Remove the accessible bolts for the seat rails on the bracket.

-- Remove the bolts -2 and 5-, and remove the faulty seat forward/back adjuster motor -1- with the bracket.

-- Slide the seat rail -3 and 4- backward or forward until the seat rail bolt is accessible.

-- Remove the screws and the seat rail.

-- Replace the seat pan lower frame with the seat forward/back adjustment motor. Refer to SEAT PAN, DISASSEMBLING AND ASSEMBLING, UPPER FRAME .

Removing with a faulty Memory Seat/Steering Column Adjustment Control Module -J136- / Front Passenger Memory Seat Control Module -J521-

WARNING:

Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". For example, this can be done by briefly touching the door striker.

-- Switch the ignition on.

-- Disconnect The Battery Ground Cable With The Ignition Turned On. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Disconnect the connector on the seat forward/back adjustment motor.

-- Connect the seat forward/back adjustment motor to an external power source and move the seat forward or back until the bolts -1- (quantity: 4) are visible.

-- Remove the screws -1-.

-- Disconnect the connectors on the connector station. Refer to CONNECTORS, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Connect the Airbag Adapter. Refer to AIRBAG ADAPTER, CONNECTING AND DISCONNECTING .

-- Lift the front seat with a second technician and remove it from the vehicle.

-- Attach the front seat to the :VAS6136 . Refer to FRONT SEAT, MOUNTING ON FIXTURE FOR SEAT REPAIR .

-- Replace the Memory Seat/Steering Column Adjustment Control Module -J136- / Front Passenger Memory Seat Control Module -J521-. Refer to MEMORY SEAT/STEERING COLUMN ADJUSTMENT CONTROL MODULE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Installing

WARNING:

Follow all safety precautions when working with pyrotechnic components. Refer to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .
Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, connecting a connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". For example, this can be done by briefly touching the door striker.

Install in reverse order of removal and Note The Following:

-- Remove the Airbag Adapter only after installing the front seat. Refer to AIRBAG ADAPTER, CONNECTING AND DISCONNECTING .

-- Connect the connectors to the connector station couplings in the floor. Refer to CONNECTORS, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

NOTE:

Make sure the connectors are installed all the way and engage audibly.

WARNING:

The ignition must be on when connecting the battery. If pyrotechnic components (for example, airbag, belt tensioner) are not repaired correctly, they may deploy unintentionally after connecting battery. There must not be anyone in the vehicle interior when connecting the battery.

-- Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition switched on. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

NOTE:

If the Airbag Indicator Lamp -K75- indicates a fault, check the DTC memory, erase it and check it again using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
