Camshaft Adjuster, Removing

WARNING:

There is a risk of injury if the radiator fan turns on by itself.

  • The coolant fan can come on even when the ignition is turned off, for example, caused by the heat still in the engine compartment.
NOTE:

The camshaft timing chains remain on the engine in the following description.

-- Remove the left and right timing chain covers. Refer to LEFT AND RIGHT TIMING CHAIN COVERS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to left side LEFT CYLINDER HEAD COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING  and right side RIGHT CYLINDER HEAD COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Insert the Crankshaft Socket:T40058  guide pins as follows:

-- Rotate the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation -arrow- to "TDC" using the Crankshaft Socket:T40058  and wrench.

-- Remove the locking bolt -arrow- for the "TDC" marking crankshaft from the cylinder block.

-- Install the Crankshaft Locking Pin:T40069  in the hole and tighten to 20 Nm. Rotate the crankshaft -1- back and forth slightly to center the pin completely, if necessary.

-- Secure the camshafts for cylinder bank 1 in "TDC" using the Camshaft Clamp:T40133/1  -arrows- (25 Nm).

-- Secure the camshafts for cylinder bank 2 in "TDC" using the Camshaft Clamp:T40133/2  -arrows- (25 Nm).

-- Press the chain tensioner guide rail for the left camshaft timing chain inward all the way using a screwdriver -1- and secure the chain tensioner with a Locking Pin:T40071  .

NOTE:

The chain tensioners for the camshaft timing chain is dampened with oil. They can only be compressed slowly by applying constant pressure.

-- Press the chain tensioner guide rail for the right camshaft timing chain inward all the way using a screwdriver -1- and secure the chain tensioner with a Locking Pin:T40071  .

CAUTION:

The camshafts can get damaged.

  • Do not use the Camshaft Clamp:T40133  to counterhold when loosening the camshaft adjuster bolt or the camshaft sprocket.

-- To counterhold, place the Wrench - Pin Type:3036  on the respective camshaft adjuster and loosen the bolt using the Multipoint Socket:T10035  .

-- To counterhold, place the Wrench - Pin Type:3212  on the camshaft chain sprocket and loosen the bolt using the Multipoint Socket:T10035  .

NOTE:

Ignore -1 and arrow-.

CAUTION:

There is a risk of destroying the engine.

  • To prevent small parts from accidentally entering the engine through the opening in the timing chain compartment, cover the opening with a clean cloth.

-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2- on the left side of the cylinder cover, then remove the camshaft adjuster and the camshaft chain sprocket.

-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2- on the right side of the cylinder cover, then remove the camshaft adjuster and the camshaft chain sprocket.
