Overview - Valve Train

- Intake Camshaft
- Checking radial clearance with Plastigauge® , wear limit: 0.1 mm
- Stroke: maximum 0.01 mm
- Axial play, checking. Refer to CAMSHAFTS, CHECKING AXIAL PLAY .
- Identification. Refer to CAMSHAFT IDENTIFICATION .
- Removing and installing. Refer to CAMSHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Camshaft Bearing Cap
- Installation position. Refer to Figure
- Installation sequence. Refer to CAMSHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING , Camshaft, Removing and Installing
- Exhaust Camshaft
- Checking radial clearance with Plastigauge® , wear limit: 0.1 mm
- Stroke: maximum 0.01 mm
- Axial play, checking. Refer to CAMSHAFTS, CHECKING AXIAL PLAY .
- Identification. Refer to CAMSHAFT IDENTIFICATION .
- Removing and installing. Refer to CAMSHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Bolt
- 5 Nm + 45° turn
- O-rings
- If leaking, replace completely
- Coat contact surfaces of sealing rings when installing control housing.
- Do not spread sealing rings excessively when inserting
- Control Housing
- Oil contact surface of sealing rings before installing
- Camshaft adjustment valves, removing and installing. Refer to CAMSHAFT ADJUSTER VALVES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Markings for valve timing. Refer to Figure
- Overview - control housing. Refer to OVERVIEW - CONTROL HOUSING .
- Check the control housing strainer for soiling before installing. Refer to Figure.
- Removing and installing. Refer to CAMSHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING
- Control Housing Bolts
- Tightening specification. Refer to OVERVIEW - CONTROL HOUSING .
- Exhaust Camshaft Adjuster
- Identification: 32A
- Rotate engine only with camshaft adjuster installed and chain installed
- Camshaft adjuster with camshaft timing chain, installing. Refer to CAMSHAFT ADJUSTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Intake Camshaft Adjuster
- Identification: 24E
- Rotate engine only with camshaft adjuster installed and chain installed
- Camshaft adjuster with camshaft timing chain, installing. Refer to CAMSHAFT ADJUSTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

- 60 Nm + 90° turn
- Always replace
- Contact surface of sensor wheel at bolt head must be dry when installing
- For removal and installation, counterhold the camshaft with a 27 mm open end wrench. Refer to CAMSHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING
- Cylinder Head Height
- Minimum height: a = 139.9 mm
- High Pressure Pump Drive Chain Sprocket
- With inner spline
- The bearing shaft fits in only one position
- Bearing Shaft
- The bearing shaft only fits in the drive chain sprocket in one position.
- Coat the bearing shaft with oil before installing.
- Vacuum pump drive shaft
- Valves
- Do not rework, only lapping is permitted
- Valve dimensions. Refer to Figure
- Alignment Sleeve
- Cylinder Head
- Check for distortion. Refer to Figure
- Removing and installing. Refer to CYLINDER HEAD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Valve seats, reworking. Refer to VALVE SEATS, REWORKING .
- After replacing, replace entire amount of coolant.
- Pump Plunger
- Note the installation position
- Support
- Check the axial play in the camshafts before installing. Refer to CAMSHAFTS, CHECKING AXIAL PLAY .
- Do not interchange
- With hydraulic valve clearance compensation
- Valve Stem Seal
- Replacing. Refer to VALVE STEM SEALS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Camshaft Timing Chain
- Mark direction of rotation before removing (installation position). Refer to Fig 2
- Camshaft adjuster with camshaft timing chain, installing. Refer to CAMSHAFT ADJUSTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Clip
- Make sure it is secure
- Roller Rocker Lever
- Check the axial play in the camshafts before installing. Refer to CAMSHAFTS, CHECKING AXIAL PLAY .
- Do not interchange
- Check roller for easy movement
- Lubricate contact surface
- Use securing clip to clip onto support element when installing
- Valve Spring
- Note the installation position
- Removing and installing. Refer to VALVE STEM SEALS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING , replacing valve stem seal
