Camshaft, Removing And Installing: Installing

CONDITIONS 

• When installing the camshafts, the cam lobes for cylinder 1 -A- must point upward.

Work Procedure

-- Turn the crankshaft using the :T10172  in the direction of engine rotation to the cylinder 1 TDC mark.

-- Lightly coat the contact surface on bearing caps 7 and 8 with Universal Grease: G 052 735 A2  before installing.

-- Insert support element in cylinder head and install roller rocker lever onto respective valve stem end and support element.

-- Make sure that all roller cam followers -1- properly contact valve shaft tips and are clipped into the respective support elements -2-.

-- Oil running surfaces of both camshafts.

-- Place respective camshaft carefully in camshaft bearings of cylinder head. While doing so, observe identification of camshafts. Refer to CAMSHAFT IDENTIFICATION .

-- Observe installed position of bearing caps.

The points -arrow A- on the intake and exhaust camshaft bearing caps face outward.

A - Intake Camshaft

-- Tighten bearing caps 5 and 9 alternating in a diagonal sequence to 5 Nm  + ¹ /₈ (45°) additional turn.

-- Install bearing caps 1 and 13 and tighten to 5 Nm  + ¹ /₈ (45°) additional turn.

-- Install bearing cap 7 and tighten to 5 Nm  + ¹ /₈ (45°) additional turn.

-- Install bearing caps 3 and 11 and tighten to 5 Nm  + ¹ /₈ (45°) additional turn.

B - Exhaust Camshaft

-- Tighten bearing caps 6 and 10 alternating in a diagonal sequence to 5 Nm  + ¹ /₈ (45°) additional turn.

-- Install bearing caps 2 and 14 and tighten to 5 Nm  + ¹ /₈ (45°) additional turn.

-- Install bearing cap 8 and tighten to 5 Nm  + ¹ /₈ (45°) additional turn.

-- Install bearing caps 4 and 12 and tighten to 5 Nm  + ¹ /₈ (45°) additional turn.

Continuation For Both Camshafts 

-- Insert the :T10068A  in both shaft Grooves.

-- Before installing, check control housing strainer for soiling. Refer to Figure.

-- Before installing control housing, sealing rings for camshafts.

-- Oil contact surface of sealing rings in control housing and then slide control housing slowly over sealing rings for camshafts.

-- Install the control housing and tighten the bolts -arrows-. Tightening specification. Refer to OVERVIEW - CONTROL HOUSING .

-- Camshaft adjuster with camshaft timing chain, installing. Refer to CAMSHAFT ADJUSTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Clean the sealing surfaces of the cover.

-- If replacing the seals in the cover. Refer to COVER SEALS, INSTALLING .

-- Apply a thin bead of Sealant:D 176 501 A1  to the clean sealing surface on the cover.

-- Install the cover and tighten all the bolts -arrows- lightly.

-- Tighten all the bolts. Tightening specification. Refer to OVERVIEW - CYLINDER HEAD .

-- Install the vacuum pump. Refer to MECHANICAL VACUUM PUMP, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Installing cylinder head cover. Refer to CYLINDER HEAD COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Assemble in reverse order of disassembly.
