Overview - Pistons And Connecting Rods: Notes
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2016 Audi A3 and 2015 Audi A3. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Bolts
- 30 Nm + 90° turn
- Always replace after removing
- Lubricate the thread and contact surface.
- Use old bolts to measure radial play, tighten to 30 Nm + 90° additional turn
- Connecting Rod Bearing Cap
- Pay attention to the installed position.
- Due to the separation procedure (cracking) of the connecting rod, the connecting rod bearing cap only fits in one position and only to the corresponding connecting rod.
- Use color to identify the cylinder and connecting rod to which it belongs -B-.
- Installed position: Markings -A- point to belt pulley side
- Bearing Shells
- Installed position. Refer to BEARING SHELL INSTALLATION POSITION IN THE CONNECTING RODS
- Always replace any worn bearing shells
- Note the version: The upper bearing shell (to the piston) is made of wear-resistant material. Refer to the Parts Catalog
- Make sure it is secure
- Connecting Rod
- With a cracked connecting rod bearing cap
- Always replace as a set.
- Use color to identify the cylinder and connecting rod bearing cap to which it belongs -B-.
- Axial clearance: Wear limit: 0.37 mm
- Radial play, measuring. Refer to CONNECTING RODS, CHECKING RADIAL CLEARANCE .
- New connecting rod, separating. Refer to NEW CONNECTING ROD, SEPARATING .
- Installed position: Markings -A- face the pulley side
- Locking Ring
- Always replace after removing
- Quantity: 2
- Piston Pin
- Removing and installing. Refer to PISTONS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Piston
- With combustion chamber
- Replace the piston if there are cracks on the piston head or piston shaft
- Mark the installation position and the allocation to the cylinder with paint. Refer to PISTON INSTALLED LOCATION AND ALLOCATION, PISTON TO CYLINDER
- Removing and installing. Refer to PISTONS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Check piston and cylinder bore. Refer to PISTONS AND CYLINDER BORE, CHECKING .
- Measure the piston projection at "Top Dead Center (TDC)". Refer to PISTON PROJECTION, MEASURING AT TDC .
- Compression Rings
- Measuring the gap. Refer to PISTON RING END GAP, MEASURING
- Measuring side clearance. Refer to MEASURING PISTON RING SIDE CLEARANCE
- Use piston ring pliers (commercially available) for removing and installing
- Installed position: The "TOP" marking or side with writing faces the piston crown.
- Offset gaps by 120°
- Oil Scraping Ring
- Measuring the gap. Refer to PISTON RING END GAP, MEASURING
- Measuring side clearance. Refer to MEASURING PISTON RING SIDE CLEARANCE
- Use piston ring pliers for removing and installing
- Installed position: The "TOP" marking or side with writing faces the piston crown.
- Offset gaps by 120° on the lower compression ring
