If fuel system components between the fuel tank and high pressure fuel pump are removed or replaced, then a fuel first filling must be performed.
Risk of Destroying the Fuel Pump
After procedures on the fuel system it is possible to damage the fuel pump by running it dry.
-- Never let the fuel pump run dry.
-- Fill or bleed the fuel pump.
To Fill the High Pressure Fuel Pump with Fuel, Proceed as Follows:
- Check the fuel gauge in the instrument cluster. The gas needle must not be in the reserve area.
-- Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
-- Select Diagnostic operating mode and Start Diagnostics .
-- Select the Select Individual Test tab and select the following tree structure consecutively:
- Drivetrain
- Select The Engine Code And Engine
- 01 - OBD-Capable Systems
- 01 - Engine Electronics
- 01 - Engine Electronics, Functions
- Fuel Pump Activation
- Press Preform The Test
- Select 120 seconds.
-- The fuel pump must run for approximately three minutes to make sure the fuel system is sufficiently filled with fuel.
-- Start the engine after filling the fuel system.
-- Let the engine run for a few minutes at an average speed and then shut it off.
-- Check the fuel system for leaks.
-- Perform a road test and fully depress the accelerator pedal at least one time.
-- Check the high pressure system again for leaks.
