PINPOINT TEST AN : One Turn Signal Lamp Is Inoperative Or Always On - Expedition

  1. AN1 CHECK STOPLAMPS OPERATION

    • Ignition ON.
    • Apply the brake pedal and observe the stoplamps.
    • Release the brake pedal and observe the stoplamps.

    Do both stoplamps illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and turn off when the brake pedal is released? 

    Yes  GO to  AN2
    No  REFER to Stoplamps  and diagnose the inoperative stoplamp(s).
  2. AN2 DETERMINE IF A TURN LAMP IS ALWAYS ON

    • Ignition ON.
    • Activate the hazard lamp function.
    • Observe the turn lamps.

    Is any turn lamp continuously illuminated (not flashing)? 

    Yes  GO to  AN3
    No  GO to  AN4
  3. AN3 CHECK THE FRONT TURN LAMP OR EXTERIOR MIRROR TURN VOLTAGE SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Ignition ON.

    Does the turn lamp in question continue to illuminate? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit in question.
    No  GO to  AN9
  4. AN4 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE INOPERATIVE TURN LAMP

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Inoperative LH Front Turn Lamp C156 or RH Front Turn Lamp C1042 .
    • Disconnect: Inoperative LH Exterior Mirror C516 or RH Exterior Mirror C622 .
    • Activate the hazard lamp function.
    • Measure:

      LH Turn Lamp

    Does the voltage alternate between 0 and greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  GO to  AN5
    No  GO to  AN6
  5. AN5 CHECK THE TURN LAMP GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure:

    Does the voltage alternate between 0 and greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  For a front turn lamp, INSTALL a new turn signal bulb. REFER to Turn Signal - Bulb .For an exterior mirror turn lamp, CHECK the exterior mirror jumper harness between the vehicle harness and the turn lamp for open circuits and damaged or pushed-out pins. If the jumper harness is OK, INSTALL a new exterior mirror turn lamp. REFER to Side Turn Signal Lamp . If the jumper harness is not OK, REPAIR the jumper harness.
    No  REPAIR the ground circuit in question.
  6. AN6 REPEAT THE ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST AND CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE INOPERATIVE TURN LAMP

    • Deactivate the hazard lamp function.
    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear the DTCs and perform the BCM on-demand self-test.
    • Activate the hazard lamp function.
    • Measure:

    Does the voltage alternate between 0 and greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  For a front turn lamp, INSTALL a new turn signal bulb. REFER to Turn Signal - Bulb .For an exterior mirror turn lamp, CHECK the exterior mirror jumper harness between the vehicle harness and the turn lamp for open circuits and damaged or pushed-out pins. If the jumper harness is OK, INSTALL a new exterior mirror turn lamp. REFER to Side Turn Signal Lamp . If the jumper harness is not OK, REPAIR the jumper harness.
    No  GO to  AN7
  7. AN7 CHECK THE BCM TURN LAMP OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Deactivate the hazard lamp function.
    • Measure:

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  AN8
    No  REPAIR the circuit in question.
  8. AN8 CHECK THE BCM TURN LAMP OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure:

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  AN9
    No  REPAIR the circuit in question.
  9. AN9 CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM OPERATION

    • Disconnect and inspect all BCM connectors.
    • Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    • Reconnect the BCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, Refer to BCM Hardware Testing ..
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
