Camshaft, Removing And Installing, Engine With Guide Rail Version 2: Removing

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

The cylinder head cover sealing surfaces on the cylinder head must not be worked on.
The camshaft bearings are integrated in the cylinder head or cylinder head cover. Before removing the cylinder head cover the tension from the camshaft timing chain must be released.
During installation, all cable ties must be installed at the same location.

Preliminary work may be required depending on the model. Refer to CAMSHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [CNSB, CNTC, CYFB] (DI - 1.8L/2.0L) / VALVETRAIN .

-- Remove the upper timing chain cover. Refer to TIMING CHAIN COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, ENGINE WITH TWO CAMSHAFT ADJUSTERS .

-- Remove the high pressure pump. Refer to HIGH PRESSURE PUMP, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the vacuum pump. Refer to ELECTRIC VACUUM PUMP, REMOVING AND INSTALLING / VACUUM PUMP, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Pay attention to the direction of rotation: the control valves have left-hand threads - risk of damaging the threads.

-- Remove the left and right control valve in direction of -arrow-.

Depending On The Version Of The Control Valve Use One Of The Tools Listed:

:T10352B
:T10352/1A
:T10352/2
:T10352/3
:T10352/4

-- To do so counterhold the crankshaft on the vibration damper with the :T40263 , :T40314 and the 24 mm socket.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.

Carefully remove the bearing bracket without tilting - risk of damage.

-- Remove the bearing mount.

TIP:

The combination of the :T40263 , :T40314 and 24 mm socket are better suited than the :T10355 for positioning the vibration damper.

With Marks In The Cylinder Head Cover

-- Turn the vibration damper in the "TDC" position.

The notch on the vibration damper must align with the arrow marking on the lower timing chain cover -arrow-.
The markings -1- on the camshaft chain sprockets must be opposite the markings -2 and 3- on the cylinder head.

Without Marks In The Cylinder Head Cover

-- Turn the vibration damper in the "TDC" position.

The notch on the vibration damper and the marking on the lower cover for timing chain must be opposite one another -arrow-.
The markings -1- on the camshafts must point upward.

-- Mark the camshaft timing chain and the cylinder head -arrows- to match the marking on the chain sprockets -1- with a waterproof marker.

-- In addition, mark the camshaft timing chain to the camshaft timing chain guide rail -2- with a waterproof marker.

-- Remove the plug -arrow-.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.

-- Install the :T40243 in direction of -arrows-.

A second technician is required for the following steps.

-- Press the chain tensioner circlip -1- together and hold it.

-- Slowly press and hold the :T40243 in direction of -arrow-.

-- Secure the chain tensioner with the :T40267 .

-- Remove the :T40243 .

-- Bolt the :T40271/2 to the cylinder head and push the chain sprocket splines in direction of -arrow 2-. If necessary, turn the intake camshaft with an :T40266 in direction of -arrow 1-.

-- Remove the bolt -1- and guide the tensioning rail -2- downward.

-- Install the :T40271/1 on the cylinder head.

-- Turn the exhaust camshaft with the :T40266 in direction of -arrow 1- and slide the :T40271/1 in the chain sprocket splines in direction of -arrow 2-.

-- Mark the camshaft sprocket to the :T40271/1 and the :T40271/2 -arrow-.

-- Remove the upper guide rail -1- by unlocking the catch with a screwdriver and pushing the guide rail forward.

-- Remove the camshaft timing chain from chain sprockets.

CAUTION:

- Never turn the crankshaft when the camshaft timing chain is removed.

-- Turn the vibration damper in the opposite direction of the engine rotation out of "TDC".

-- Use the :T40266 to turn the intake camshaft in direction of -arrow 1-, slide out the :T40271/2 from the chain sprocket splines in direction of -arrow 2- and bring the camshaft into the rest position.

-- Use the :T40266 to turn the exhaust camshaft in direction of -arrow 1-, slide out the :T40271/1 from the chain sprocket splines in direction of -arrow 2- and bring the camshaft into the rest position.

-- Remove the cylinder head cover bolts in -1 to 6- sequence.

-- Pry up the cylinder head cover -2- using a tool for example a screwdriver -1- starting at the chain side.

-- Guide the cylinder head cover under the permanent ventilation.

-- Remove the camshaft and cover the open engine components.

-- If necessary for continuing work: mark the roller rocker lever and hydraulic lifter for reinstallation, remove them and place on a clean surface.
