Camshaft Timing Chain, Removing And Installing, Engine With Two Camshaft Adjusters: Removing

Preliminary work may be required depending on the model. Refer to CAMSHAFT TIMING CHAIN, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [CNSB, CNTC, & CYFB] (DI - 1.8L/2.0L) / CHAIN DRIVE .

-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING / OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

-- Remove the upper timing chain cover. Refer to TIMING CHAIN COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, ENGINE WITH TWO CAMSHAFT ADJUSTERS .

• Pay attention to the direction of rotation: the control valves have left-hand threads - risk of damaging the threads.

-- Remove the left and right control valve in direction of -arrow-.

Depending On The Version Of The Control Valve Use One Of The Tools Listed:

• :T10352B 
• :T10352/1A 
• :T10352/2 
• :T10352/3 
• :T10352/4 

-- To do so counterhold the crankshaft on the vibration damper with the :T40263  , :T40314  and the 24 mm socket.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.

• Carefully remove the bearing mount, without tilting.

-- Remove the bearing mount.

-- Turn the vibration damper in the "TDC" position.

• The notch on the vibration damper and the marking on the lower cover for timing chain must be opposite one another -arrow-.
• The markings -1- on the camshafts must point upward.

TIP: 

The combination of the :T40263  , :T40314  and 24 mm socket are better suited than the :T10355  for positioning the vibration damper.

-- Remove the lower timing chain cover. Refer to LOWER TIMING CHAIN COVER, REPLACING .

-- Check the "TDC point" again.

-- Press the oil pump chain tensioner bracket in direction of -arrow- and lock with :T40011  .

-- Remove the bolt -1- and the chain tensioner -2-.

-- Remove the oil pump chain from the three-layer chain sprocket, pull forward and place at the bottom of the oil pump chain sprocket.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.

-- Install the :T40243  on the cylinder head -arrows lower -.

-- Press the chain tensioner circlip -1- together and hold it.

-- Slowly press and hold the :T40243  in direction of -arrow-.

• This will push back the chain tensioner.

TIP:

The chain tensioner is lubricated with oil and can only be pushed back slowly by applying constant pressure.

-- Lock the chain tensioner with the :T40267  .

-- Remove the :T40243  .

-- Bolt the :T40271/2  to the cylinder head and push the chain sprocket splines in direction of -arrow 2-. If necessary, turn the intake camshaft with an :T40266  in direction of -arrow 1-.

-- Install the :T40271/1  on the cylinder head.

• The help of a second technician is necessary for the following step.

-- Hold the exhaust camshaft with the :T40266  in direction of -arrow A-. Remove the bolt -1- and guide the tensioning rail -2- downward.

-- Turn the exhaust camshaft clockwise in direction of -arrow A- until the :T40271/1  can be pushed in the chain sprocket splines -C-, in direction of -arrow B-.

-- Remove the guide rail -1- by unlocking the latch -arrow- with a screwdriver and pushing the guide rail forward.

-- Remove the camshaft timing chain from the camshaft sprockets and hang it on the camshaft pins -arrows-.

-- Remove the chain tensioner -1- for the balance shaft timing chain.

-- Remove the bolts -1-. Remove the tensioning rail -2- and the guide rails -3- and -4-.

-- Loosen the adjusting bolt -A- and remove the tensioning pin -B-.

-- Remove the oil pump drive timing chain to remove the three stage chain sprocket.

-- Remove the camshaft timing chain and drive chain for the balance shaft.
