Crankshaft, Measuring Radial Play

Plastigage

Procedure

NOTE:

Do not interchange used bearings

Bearing shells that are worn down to the nickel layer must be replaced.

-- Remove main bearing cap and clean bearing cap and pins.

-- Place Plastigage over entire width of bearing journal or into bearing shells.

Plastigage must rest in center of bearing shell.

-- Position the main bearing cap and tighten it to 65 Nm. Do not rotate the crankshaft when doing so.

-- Remove main bearing caps again.

-- Compare width of Plastigage with measuring scale.

Radial clearance:

New: 0.017 to 0.037 mm.
Wear limit: 0.15 mm.
