Rear Final Drive: Installing

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 19 other vehicles, including the 2017 Audi S5, 2016 Audi S5, 2015 Audi S5, 2015 Audi RS 5, and 2014 Audi S5. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Installation is in reverse order of removal. Observe the following when doing so:

-- Mount the rear final drive -1- with the V.A.G 1383 A and V.A.G 1359/2 on the subframe -2- in its installed position.

NOTE:

The V.A.G 1383 A and the V.A.G 1359/2 are not shown in the upper area I of the illustration.

-- Install the left drive axle -3- into the final drive flange shaft.

-- A second technician must lift the rear final drive -1- on the right side and push it in direction of -arrow- toward the left side of the vehicle.

-- Insert the right drive axle -5- into the final drive flange shaft -4-.

-- Push the final drive -A- slightly to the front.

-- Rotate and install the crossmember -B- in the opposite direction of -arrow 1- while guiding past the final drive -arrow 2-.

-- Tighten the 4 bolts that connect the crossmember -B- to the rear final drive diagonally to the tightening specification -4- REAR FINAL DRIVE ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW .

-- Guide the T40154 through the holes in the subframe -A-. Move the final drive to the left or to the right if necessary.

-- Install the bolts -2- and -4- hand-tight.

NOTE:

The V.A.G 1383 A and the V.A.G 1359/2 are not shown in the illustration.

-- Tighten the bolt -4- to the tightening specification -3- REAR FINAL DRIVE ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW .

-- Tighten the bolts -2- to the tightening specification -2- REAR FINAL DRIVE ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW .

-- Remove the V.A.G 1383 A from under the final drive.

-- Install the left -1- and right -3- drive axles. Refer to OVERVIEW - DRIVE AXLE .

-- Attach the left drive axle heat shield -A- to the crossmember/rear final drive -arrows- -6- REAR FINAL DRIVE ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW .

-- Tighten the driveshaft to the rear final drive. Match up the markings and follow the tightening sequence DRIVESHAFT FROM REAR FINAL DRIVE .

-- Tighten the driveshaft intermediate bearing to the body so that it is free of tension -arrows-. Tightening specification -8- DRIVESHAFT BOLTED ON TRANSMISSION-SIDE ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW .

-- Check axle oil level in rear final drive. Refer to REAR FINAL DRIVE GEAR OIL, CHECKING .

Audi A4 and Audi A5 

-- Attach the heat shield -3- to the body -arrows-.

Continuation for All Vehicles 

-- Install and adjust rear part of exhaust system free of stress. Refer to the appropriate service information .

-- Attach the crossmember -1-, if equipped, to the body. Refer to OVERVIEW - UNDERBODY PANELS .
