Automatic Transmission Cooler And Lines Overview

NOTE:

Clean working conditions for the automatic transmission. Refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .

General repair instructions, refer to REPAIR INFORMATION .

Seal any open lines and connections with a clean plug from the engine bung set VAS 6122.

Check ATF level after replacing ATF pipes. Refer to ATF, CHECKING LEVEL AND CORRECTING 

CAUTION:

There is a risk of damaging the transmission.

  • Remove all the plugs on the ATF pipes and on the transmission that were installed during removal.
  • The ATF cooling function will not work and the transmission will be damaged if the plugs are forgotten.

  1. O-ring
    • Removing and installing
    • Coat with ATF before inserting
  2. ATF Pipe, Supply
    • Connection piece on ATF cooler
    • With connector coupling -14-
  3. Bolt
    • 5 Nm
    • First insert the ATF pipes with new O-rings by hand as far as the stop
  4. Bolt
    • 9 Nm
    • Secures the ATF pipe on the engine
  5. ATF Pipe, Return
    • From the ATF cooler to the transmission
    • With connector coupling -14-
  6. ATF Pipe, Supply
    • From the transmission to the ATF cooler
  7. Screw
    • 23 Nm
    • Secures the ATF pipe with the driveshaft heat shield
  8. Nut
    • 8 Nm
    • Secures the ATF pipe on the engine
  9. O-ring
    • Removing and installing
    • Coat with ATF before inserting
  10. Transmission
  11. Bolt
    • 20 Nm
    • First insert the ATF pipes with new O-rings by hand as far as the stop
    • The retaining tab on the lower ATF pipe must fit inside the threaded hole in the transmission.
    • The retaining tab on the upper ATF pipe must touch the bottom one.
  12. O-ring
    • Removing and installing
    • Is installed in the connector coupling -14-.
    • Coat with ATF before inserting
  13. Clip
    • To separate the connector coupling -14-, remove the securing clip.
    • To install the ATF pipe on the connector coupling, first let the clip engage 3 times in the connector coupling.
  14. Connector Coupling
    • To disconnect the ATF pipe, remove the clip -13-.
    • To install the ATF pipes, connect the clip -13- and replace the O-ring -12-.
    • Slide the ATF pipes together and let them engage.
  15. Connector Piece
    • For the connector coupling
  16. ATF Pipe, Return
    • Connection piece on ATF cooler
    • From the ATF cooler to the transmission
    • Connected with the connector coupling -14-
  17. ATF Cooler
    • Integrated in the coolant cooler
    • Removing and installing, refer to COOLING SYSTEM
