Transmission, Removing, Vehicles With 8-Cylinder Gasoline Engine (RS5, RS4)

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

Preparing the Gearbox Support T140173:

-- The bracket attached to -1- must be removed.

-- The bracket -2- must be turned so that the longer side faces up as illustrated.

Removing

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging electronic components when disconnecting the battery.

  • Complete the steps for disconnecting the battery.

-- Position the front wheels so they are straight.

-- Turn off the ignition.

-- Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) cable -2-. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

Vehicles with Hydraulic Power Steering

-- Extract the power steering hydraulic oil from the reservoir -3- using the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN372500.

NOTE:

Ignore items -1, 2 and 4-.

All Vehicles

-- Remove the engine cover -arrows-.

-- Remove the plenum chamber bulkhead. Refer to OVERVIEW - BULKHEAD .

-- Remove the selector lever cable ball socket -2- using the Pry Lever80-200 from the gearshift lever.

-- Remove the circlip -1- and free up the selector lever cable.

NOTE:

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

-- Remove the bolts -2 through 5- connecting the engine to transmission. They are accessible from above.

NOTE:

Ignore item -A-.

-- Free up the upper wiring harness on the transmission.

-- Remove the left and right front wheels.

-- Remove the left and right drive axle cover -1- inside the wheel housing.

-- Remove the noise insulations -1 and 2-. Refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the left and right front muffler. .

NOTE:

Check the vehicle data label or the designation on the rear final drive itself to determine which one is installed in the vehicle. Then select the correct rear final drive service information.

-- Removing the driveshaft. .

-- If equipped, remove the left and right crossmember. Refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME .

-- Remove the subframe crossbrace. Refer to SUBFRAME CROSSBRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

NOTE:

Depending on the model and date of manufacture there are different versions.

CAUTION:

The suspension components could be damaged.

  • Do not rest the vehicle on its wheels if the subframe mount, the steering gear or the subframe crossbrace are not installed correctly.

-- Remove the left and right bolts -arrows- and the heat shield -1-.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and then remove the heat shield from the right drive axle.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and the left drive axle heat shield.

-- Remove left and right drive axles from transmission flange shafts.

-- Remove the nut -2-.

NOTE:

Ignore -1-.

Vehicles with an ATF Pipe Filter

-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN372500 under the transmission.

-- Remove the clamp -1- and separate the ATF pipe.

-- Remove the bolt -4-, pull the ATF pipe -3- off the transmission and move it to the side.

-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set VAS6122.

NOTE:

Ignore item -2-.

-- Remove the bolt -1-.

NOTE:

-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN372500 under the transmission.

-- Remove the clamp -1- and separate the ATF pipe.

-- Remove the bolt -4-, pull the ATF pipe -3- off the transmission and move it to the side.

-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set VAS6122.

NOTE:

Ignore item -2-.

All Vehicles

-- Disconnect the connectors and free up the electric wires.

  1. Servotronic Solenoid Valve -N119- (vehicles with hydraulic power steering)
  2. On the Engine Speed Sensor -G28-

-- Disconnect the connector at the Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor 2 -G754-.

CAUTION:

There is a risk of destroying the Transmission Control Module (TCM) (Mechatronic) with static discharge.

  • Do not touch contacts in transmission connector with hands.

-- To discharge static electricity, touch the transmission housing (without wearing gloves).

-- Turn the twist lock counter-clockwise in direction of -arrow- and disconnect the connector from the transmission.

-- Free up the wiring harness -arrows-.

-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear and push them both upward. .

-- Remove the bolt -1-.

-- Push the lug off the transmission and swing it to the rear -arrow-.

-- Remove the bolt -1-.

NOTE:

Ignore item -2-.

-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission -arrow-.

-- Place the Crankshaft Turning Tool T140257 on the Wrench - 21mm T140263.

-- Attach the Crankshaft Turning Tool T140257 to the vibration damper bolts.

-- Counterhold the crankshaft with the Crankshaft Turning Tool T140257 and the Wrench - 21mm T140263 to loosen the flywheel bolts.

NOTE:

Ignore the notch on the Crankshaft Turning Tool T140257.

When mounting, turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation -arrow-.

-- Remove the six flywheel bolts -arrow- while turning the crankshaft 60° further in the direction of engine rotation.

Vehicles with Hydraulic Power Steering

-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN372500 under the separating point.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-, disconnect the hydraulic line -1- from the steering gear and move it to the side.

-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set VAS6122.

Vehicles with Electro-Mechanical Power Steering

-- Loosen the retainer -arrow-, push the release downward to disconnect the connector -2- from the Power Steering Control Module -J500-.

-- Disconnect the connector -1-.

-- Free up the wiring harness.

All Vehicles

-- Remove the bolt -1- and push the starter heat shield slightly to the side.

NOTE:

Ignore item -2-.

-- Remove the bolt -1- from the starter.

-- Remove the starter from the transmission and leave it in the installation position.

NOTE:

On vehicles with electro-mechanical power steering for the bolt -7- there is a nut with anti-twist mechanism on the engine-side.

-- Remove remaining transmission to engine connecting bolts -6 through 10-.

NOTE:

Ignore item -A-.

CAUTION:

Danger of leaks in the ATF pan.

  • The Gearbox Support T140173 must not be set on the ATF pan.

-- Place the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS 6031 with the prepared Gearbox Support T140173 under the transmission.

The transmission support must be placed at the front as follows:

-- Secure the transmission with a tensioning strap -1-.

-- Remove the bolts from the tunnel crossmember -arrows-.

NOTE:

-- Press the transmission off the engine and lower it carefully using the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931.
