Camshaft Timing Chain: Removing

-- Observe the safety precautions. Refer to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .

-- Follow clean working conditions. Refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .

-- Remove the upper timing chain cover. Refer to Removing .

-- Rotate the vibration damper to the Top Dead Center (TDC) position -arrow- using the counter hold tool T10355:

-- Remove the lower timing chain cover. Refer to LOWER TIMING CHAIN COVER .

CAUTION: The control valve has left hand threads.

-- Remove the control valve in the -direction of the arrow- using the assembly tool T10352.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the bearing bracket.

-- Press the oil pump chain tensioner in the -direction of the arrow- and secure it with a locking pin T40011.

-- Remove the oil pump chain tensioner -1-.

-- Remove the oil pump drive chain.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.

Two different chain tensioners may be installed depending on the version. Version 1:

-- Install the Chain Tensioner Lever T40243 -arrows-.

-- Lift the chain tensioner locking wedge -arrow 1-. Sand the end of the Locking Pin T40011 down to a point. A screwdriver with a head approximately 1.5 mm wide can also be used.

CAUTION: There is a risk of damaging the chain tensioner. Proceed very carefully.

-- Slowly press and hold the Chain Tensioner Lever T40243 in the -direction of arrow 2-.

-- Secure the chain tensioner using Locking Pin T40011.

Version 2:

-- Install the Chain Tensioner Lever T40243 -arrows-.

-- Press the chain tensioner locking ring -1- together and hold it.

-- Slowly press and hold the Chain Tensioner Lever T40243 in the -direction of the arrow-.

-- Secure the chain tensioner with the Tensioner Locking Tool T40267.

All 

-- Remove the Chain Tensioner Lever T40243.

-- Attach the Camshaft Lock T40271/2 to the cylinder head and slide it into the chain sprocket splines in the direction of the arrow -2-. If necessary, slightly turn the intake camshaft with a wrench -1-.

-- Attach the Camshaft Lock T40271/1 to the cylinder head. Hold the camshaft with a wrench in a clockwise direction -arrow-.

-- Remove the bolt -A- and remove the tensioning rail while continuing to hold the camshaft.

-- Slide the Camshaft Lock T40271/1 into the chain sprocket splines -2-. If necessary, turn the exhaust camshaft clockwise -1- further, until the camshaft locating tool can be pushed in. The camshaft timing chain must be >>loose<< between the chain sprocket.

-- Remove the guide rail for the camshaft timing chain -A-.

-- Remove the timing chain.
