Compression Pressure, Checking

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

Test Sequence 

NOTE:

Engine oil temperature: minimum 30 °C (86 °F).

Battery voltage at least 12.7 V

-- Remove the ignition coils, refer to IGNITION COILS WITH POWER OUTPUT STAGES -N70-, -N127-, -N291- AND -N292- .

-- Disconnect the connectors for Cylinder 1 Fuel Injector -N30-, Cylinder 2 Fuel Injector -N31-, Cylinder 3 Fuel Injector -N32- and Cylinder 4 Fuel Injector -N33-.

-- Remove the spark plugs using a Spark Plug Removal Tool 3122B.

-- Check the compression pressure using the Compression Tester Kit VAG1763 and Compression Tester Kit - Adapter 6VAG1763/6 (replaces Fuel Injection Gauge Kit - CO Adapter VAG1381/1).

NOTE:

For information on using the tester, refer to the Operating Instructions.

-- Operate starter until tester shows no further pressure increase.

Compression Pressure Description Pressure Specifications
New 11.0 to 14.0 bar (159.5 to 203.0 psi)
Wear limit 7.0 bar (101.5 psi)
Maximum difference between cylinders 3.0 bar (43.5 psi)

-- Install the spark plugs, refer to => 14.2Spark Plugs, Replacing.

-- Install the ignition coils, refer to IGNITION COILS WITH POWER OUTPUT STAGES -N70-, -N127-, -N291- AND -N292- .

NOTE:

By separating the connections, DTCs are stored to memory. After the test, check the DTC memory and erase, if necessary.

-- If the connectors were disconnected and the engine was started, then malfunctions have been stored in the engine control module DTC memory. Generate readiness code  in Guided Functions  Vehicle Diagnosis Tester.
