Drive Axle, Assembly Overview
- Outer Constant Velocity Joint
- Replace only as complete unit.
- Checking, refer to OUTER CV JOINT, CHECKING .
- Removing, refer to DISASSEMBLING OUTER CV JOINT .
- Grease table, refer to FILLING JOINTS WITH GREASE .
- Installing, refer to OUTER CV JOINT, INSTALLING .
- When installing joint on axle shaft, splines on axle shaft must be lightly coated with grease used in joint.
- Bolt
- Hex bolt: 200 Nm + 180° turn. Refer to HEX BOLT BETWEEN DRIVE AXLE AND WHEEL HUB, LOOSENING AND TIGHTENING .
- Twelve point bolt with Ribs: 70 Nm + 90° turn. Refer to 12-POINT BOLT WITH RIBS BETWEEN DRIVE AXLE AND WHEEL HUB, LOOSENING AND TIGHTENING .
- Twelve point bolt without Ribs: 200 Nm + 180°. Refer to 12-POINT BOLT WITHOUT RIBS BETWEEN DRIVE AXLE AND WHEEL HUB, LOOSENING AND TIGHTENING
- Different versions.
- Always replace after removing it.
- Before installing, clean the threads in the constant velocity joint with a tap.
- Profile Shaft
- Clamp
- Replace.
- Tensioning, refer to STAINLESS STEEL CLAMPS FOR HYTREL PROTECTIVE JOINT BOOTS, TENSIONING or CLAMPS FOR RUBBER PROTECTIVE JOINT BOOTS, TENSIONING .
- CV Boot for Outer Constant Velocity (CV) Joint
- Without ventilation bore.
- Check for tears and scuffing.
- Clamp
- Replace.
- Tensioning, refer to STAINLESS STEEL CLAMPS FOR HYTREL PROTECTIVE JOINT BOOTS, TENSIONING or CLAMPS FOR RUBBER PROTECTIVE JOINT BOOTS, TENSIONING .
- Dished Washer
- Installed position, refer to INSTALLED LOCATION OF SPRING WASHER AND THRUST WASHER ON OUTER JOINT .
- Spacer Ring (Plastic)
- Installed position, refer to INSTALLED LOCATION OF SPRING WASHER AND THRUST WASHER ON OUTER JOINT .
- Securing Ring
- Replace.
- Insert in shaft groove.
- Protective Boot for Inner Constant Velocity Joint
- Without ventilation bore.
- Check for tears and scuffing.
- Drive off CV joint using drift.
- Coat sealing surface with D 454 300 A2 before installing on constant velocity joint.
- Clamp
- Replace.
- Tensioning, refer to STAINLESS STEEL CLAMPS FOR HYTREL PROTECTIVE JOINT BOOTS, TENSIONING or CLAMPS FOR RUBBER PROTECTIVE JOINT BOOTS, TENSIONING .
- Backing plate
- Bolt
- Pre-tighten diagonally to 10 Nm, then tighten diagonally again to the tightening specification.
- Tightening specification M8: 40 Nm and diagonally.
- Tightening specification M10: 70 Nm and diagonally.
- Always replace after removing it.
- Securing Ring
- Replace
- Removing and installing using VW 161 A. Refer to DRIVE AXLE WITH 90 MM OUTER CV JOINT => Removing Securing Ring .
- GasketNOTE:
Bonding surface on CV joint must be free of grease and oil!
- Inner Constant Velocity Joint
- Replace only as complete unit.
- Checking, refer to INNER CV JOINT, CHECKING .
- Pressing off, refer to PRESSING OFF INNER CONSTANT VELOCITY JOINT .
- Grease table, refer to FILLING JOINTS WITH GREASE .
- Pressing on, refer to PRESSING ON INNER CV JOINT .
- When installing joint on axle shaft, splines on axle shaft must be lightly coated with grease used in joint.
- Dished Washer
- Installed position. Refer to INSTALLED LOCATION OF SPRING WASHER ON INNER JOINT .
